Echo dot help

I'm confused (nothing new there!)

I'd decided I'd like the echo dot for myself (in the kitchen) and the DC for their rooms. I know one will use it mostly for music and the other will use it to ask Alexa "facts" as well as possibly music. I'm confused about which dot to get...

The new dot comes with a display on it. Neither DC has a clock in their room and this would be so handy. Is it possible to set an alarm on the 3rd gen. Dot? This is the main difference I can see between it and the new Dot but there's quite a difference in price.

We have an Apple Music family subscription - will we be able to listen to music in our libraries on the Dots? On either or just the newer one?

Of course I've missed the Prime Day deal if it turns out the 3rd gen Dot is actually fine for us, but it's still cheaper than the new one and maybe it will be reduced again for Black Friday? If people could help me decide which one I need to get that would be so helpful Flowers

You can set an alarm on the 3rd gen dot and ask Alexa the time (if you ask her in a whisper she replies in a whisper, handy for the middle of the night!).
I don't know about Apple Music. I have Amazon Music subscription but only the sort that allows it to be played on one device at a time.

You can set an alarm on any of them, no clock face needed. In fact I'd never get a clock face just for that- just ask her the time, ask her to tell you when it's 5pm, ask her to wake you up at 6.30am, ask her to time 5mins.

Thanks. And damn! Wish I'd bought the 3rd gen ones yesterday when on offer!! I will hold off until Black Friday or maybe some other good deal appears.

I have a 3rd gen and could listen to my Amazon music through it but I only had the basic one device subscription so not sure how it works with a family one.

You can also 'drop in' to any Alexa from any other in the house, so if you're in the kitchen with dinner ready you can tell the DC to come down without having to holler up the stairs Grin

picklemewalnuts · 15/10/2020 15:53

Fast try 'echo, announce tea's ready'. And she does! No need to drop in.

Also, 'send Fred Jones a message' or 'call Fred jones'.

My mum called my brother when she fell over. 'Alexa, call Fred Jones'.

She's brilliant and I don't care if Bezos is listening to my every sigh and sneeze, I need her.

I'm so glad to hear this, and also so mad with myself for not checking before yesterday Angry

I'm looking forward to not having to apologise to the lovely neighbours about my banshee wailing up the stairs to my kids Grin I'm not at all worried about big brother listening in - the babblings of our daily lives could be made into one of those podcast things that help you drift off to sleep....

Lot's of questions answered already but just to add, definitely wait until Black Friday, they will certainly be reduced!

....speaking of which, there are some lovely skills that play you Forest or ocean sounds. Or thunder.
And you must Miaow to her. She Miaows back!
I think Big Brother just sighs and rolls his eyes oh, it’s that one again, Dolly Parton turned up to 11, does she never get sick of it? Grin

Don’t let on there is an Add To Shopping List skill. I find some very odd things on mine (thanks, DS Hmm )

DramaLlama12 · 15/10/2020 16:27

@saucery I had phyllo pastry on mine and boots ..
I don’t know what Boots is but I’m assuming the other is filo pastry

MrsMime · 15/10/2020 16:29

You can play Apple Music through the Alexa. There's an option in the settings on the app to use Apple Music as the default.

We accidentally got dog biscuits once! The dog has never been seen to speak in front of us, yet somehow...

Oh great. Echo is miaowing at my dog.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 15/10/2020 17:39

There is a version of the third gen with the clock display but they're very hard to get hold of sadly. We've got them in the dc rooms as we made the mistake of getting them second hand echo shows previously for the clock display and that was a disaster - not the second hand element as they work fine, but it bloody well gives tips to get around things like changing the wake word so they can't use it at night and watch videos to their hearts content 🤦‍♀️. So now we have echo shows in the main rooms and the dc have the clock display 3rd gens.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 15/10/2020 18:51

Thanks everyone I'm loving the "skills" suggestions! The DC will have great fun I'm sure. Definitely will not be telling them about the 'add to basket' feature Wink I'm convinced now that it's only really the 3rd gen ones we need. Hopefully we'll gag a bargain.

I have an eight in my
Kitchen and it's great for
Pulling up recipes I can see.

It pulls up words to some songs aswell which I may or may not take advantage of when I'm cooking in on my own.

And you can watch prime
On it if you have it.
