Keyboard for child

Ds(5) is desperate for a keyboard for Christmas. He loves playing around on the grandparent’s piano and wants something for at home. He loves music and attends an introductory music session every week, where they learn about rhythm, play percussion instruments and have a go at slightly more complex thing like mini glockenspiels and two string dulcimers.

I don’t really want to buy one of the colourful toys that are aimed at the pre-school music, As I would like something he can start to learn a few notes etc on if he wishes. We aren’t, however, thinking about formal lessons for at least a couple of years, so don’t want anything too expensive or fancy. I am well aware he may lose interest and what we buy may gather dust.

Bearing all of this in mind, can anyone recommend the type of thing we should perhaps be looking at. I am a bit clueless!

TIA

Thanks Fivemoreminutes1

I will look more closely at that. It certainly seems to tick the boxes of good reviews and not being overly expensive.

We got a keyboard from Smyths including stand for well under £100 (although it was in the sale at the time). My son now uses it for piano practice and it’s bearing up really well.

Scoobidoo, can I ask which one you bought, please? I did look online as he keeps looking at the ones in the Smyths catalogue, but some seem to have pretty bad reviews. Would be good to know if there is a good’en hidden there. Thanks

Not sure if this is too basic? www.amazon.co.uk/BEST-LEARNING-First-Piano-Book/dp/B06WGN776Z/?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

We bought the 54 key keyboard and stand 2 years ago and it has been fantastic - it gets quite a hammering when friends come over. I bought on recommendation of a friend who was also pleased with it.

However I see they’ve now changed the design and it now has some bad reviews so quality may have gone downhill?
