Outside decorations

I must admit I'm not normally an outside decorations fan, but this year I am feeling the need. Especially seeing all the go for a walk to find Christmas lights posts. I wonder if anyone has any recommendations....

It must be relatively easy to put up. There's just me and I'm not over handyperson like. At all. I have also had an excuse to put in an outside socket recently so electric is doable although I thoroughly approve of solar..

I find blow up Santa's a little creepy. Same for those santa climbing a rope ladder.

I do however like lights, Disney Christmas stuff, and anything else santa. I think its got to be statement enough to make it worth doing in the first place so tasteful isnt the main consideration GrinGrin bright and colourful is good.

I wondered about projectors. They seem very me but how far away from the house do they need to be to work? Are they clear enough to be worth doing?

Our window cleaner is amenable to putting outside lights up. Have a chat with your local ones, so much easier to pay someone 25 quid or so to set up in double quick time rather than wobbling inexpertly up yourself.

Could you put lights in all your windows inside? I think they can look quite effective and no climbing up ladders required!

Yes absolutely. Looking for recommendations of stuff that might look nice.

That's a fab idea. Unfortunately my window cleaner is a long reach pressure washer type.

We have outdoor lights. We also have two potted trees at the front door with lights.

JinglesWish · 28/09/2020 09:43

Amazon is the best place for lights. I bought warm white icicles for all along our gutters and clear plastic gutter clips from Home Bargains.

I might add hanging stars inside the windows this year

I quite fancy some light up rainbow decorations if such a thing exists!

Stompythedinosaur · 28/09/2020 10:33

There are command hooks for outdoor decorations which are handy for sticking lights around window frame.

I had never considered getting an outside projector , but DS2 gave us one so we had to use it. Now we love it, it projects flurries of green and red patterns onto the house. The light part is on a small pole which just sticks into the gravel about three metres from the house.

OP, good question about whether they will be clear enough. Flushed with the success of DS’s gift, we bought one for the garden. White snowflakes, very mousefart, whereas the original creates stunning effects on the trees if we take it into the garden.

Can’t remember the brand, but I will have a look in the cellar in case it still has it original box

I have a trebled up string of tree lights which are suitable for both in and outdoors which I have going around my open porch. I have another string of lights which I put around the living room window and trail through the plants. I don't usually like lit up figures but a house near us has a really lovely deer and polar bear with white lights and they are quite effective.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 28/09/2020 16:38

@TrickyD Yes please. I have visions of Santa's and Christmas trees, Indistinct mouse farts are exactly what worries me! Grin Grin. A specific recommendation would be fab. Your good projector sounds perfect!!!

@Cakestandkitchen sounds lovely. Sometimes I put lights around a tree in the garden but its too tall so it looks a bit naff. An actual little Christmas tree might be cool.

@longtompot googling deers and polar bears

Sorry, Hazelnutlatteplease, I have braved the cellar but no sign of the box. DS was here so I asked him where he got it from, hoping Amazon, as we could have tracked down the order, but sadly it was from a local garden centre, so not much help to you.
I have just looked at Christmas projectors on Amazon, hoping to find one that looks like ours, but there are so many! I would say though, read the reviews carefully, as one I thought looked similar had terrible feedback.

What type of stuff do you like? A very beautiful old Manor near us just has lights and a huge red bow in the middle.
Do you have a Bush or tree to give you structure? You could hang decorations on a tree or Bush, string lights...

Cottagy and beautiful.....

The range have lots of Dec's that could be used outside. We have lights, soft white and hang baubles and candy canes on our Bush I adore it.

Jingleswish I've been thinking about getting some indoor hanging star lights too, have you seen any good ones this year?
We're in a new build... I know. And our windows are tiny, less than 1m wide all round.
