...but I can only find a tree diagram - thing!

Does anyone know where I can find a large map with languages marked and in the vernaculars?!

No but I really like the sound of your ds! How old is he?

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 25/09/2020 18:52

I bet Stanford's in Covent Garden would have one. If you call they're really helpful.

Ted27 · 25/09/2020 18:55

try mapsoftheworld.com

they have a big range, might be something there

TheSeedsOfADream · 25/09/2020 21:16

Oh. I think I want one! Say thank you to your DD!

LadyofMisrule · 28/09/2020 22:01

This one does some of them blog.richmond.edu/livesofmaps/2014/12/03/map-of-european-language-origins/

elQuintoConyo · 02/10/2020 14:43

LadyofMisrule I have that map at work, it's fascinating! It's abaeutiful colour, too, not all garish primary colours so it will work in any room, at any age.

However, the tree is missing Basque.... Not even a small shoot at the base of the tree or a flower. That's Basque for you! Not connected to anything Grin

mackerella · 02/10/2020 22:01

It's a book rather than a map, but your DS might also like the book Hello World by Jonathan Litton - it has "hello" in all the major languages for each continent, in the native script, and you can lift a flap that tells you how to pronounce them Smile

I was about to suggest that book too! There's also a bingo game of it.

Seainasive · 02/10/2020 22:16

That map is beautiful! Any idea where I can buy one?

CountFosco · 02/10/2020 22:27

Languages map

Thanks for all the responses everyone.

I'm going to call Stanford's next week or possibly have a trip to London in half-term Covid allowing, which isn't looking too likely atm.

The tree LadyofMisrule linked too is the one I'd found, but I don't think you can buy it as a poster from that site. I'm thinking of asking a print shop to put it on canvas or something - if they can and that wouldn't be breaking some copywrite rule??

That book looks lovely but at 13 he's a bit old for it. Would have loved it when younger though. He's moving his bed room up to the attic so wants a bit interesting poster/map to go on the large sloping ceiling!

Hi OP. I know these aren't exactly what you're looking for, but Visual Capitalist has some graphics on language, e.g. this and this

If you poke around on the site they have lots of stuff like this which may be a option if you don't manage to find a map version.

oxcat1 · 04/10/2020 21:39

@looseddaughter : I also adore that map! @LadyofMisrule: any idea how your workplace got it?!

LadyofMisrule · 04/10/2020 23:44

@oxcat I think you need to ask @elQuintoConyo

oxcat1 · 05/10/2020 12:22

@LadyofMisrule: you're right! Sorry!

@elQuintoConyo: do you have any ideas at all where your office got that tree image? It is beautiful and looks like it would get several takers.....?

Thanks all

Found It: hivemill.com/products/stand-still-stay-silent-language-family-tree-poster?_pos=21&_sid=869d3aa16&_ss=r

It’s from a graphic novel called Stand Still Stay Silent by Minna Sundberg.

oxcat1 · 05/10/2020 21:43

Wow. Well done @Seainasive!

International shipping seems to be fixed fee of $15 (but there could be tax) so if anyone is interested, we could potentially do one order?
