Advent Calendars

Are you getting one with items in this year? I usually have an old fashioned one with just the pictures behind the door, but I fancy one with items in this year. I had a Yankee Candle one a few years ago as a birthday present (December baby.) and I really enjoyed opening a new candle everyday.
I don't want a beauty calendar really so am looking for some ideas/inspiration. So, if you are getting an item a day advent calendar, what one?

I've ordered a yarn one. Hoping to crochet myself a jumper for Christmas 🧶
Stationary is also a good alternative to beauty

dizzygirl1 · 28/08/2020 08:21

I'm hoping for the Holland and barrett advent calendar for DD (13) as last years was amazing value and then probably a lego advent for DS(11).

QforCucumber · 28/08/2020 08:24

Theres a swarovski one on wowcher at the moment for only £22 which I'm tempted by

Mustbethewine · 28/08/2020 10:58

I got the body shop calendar and also a wax melt one. I had the Yankee one a few years ago too, it was really beautiful!

73kittycat73 · 28/08/2020 12:31

Thank you all for your replies. What's inside the Holland and barrett one
dizzygirl1, if you remember?
Like the sound of the yarn one AHippoNamedBooBooButt. Is it crochet, or knitting? (I'm a knitter myself.)
Thanks for the ideas all!

Its just mini balls of wool so no particular craft. The one I bought is sold out now but there usually quite a selection so have a Google.

73kittycat73 · 28/08/2020 23:39

Ok, thanks for that.

DH got me the John Lewis one last year and I really liked it. Any bits i wasn't keen on, I have to my SIL and cousin.

DH has previously had:
Gin
Pork scratchings
Jelly beans
he doesn't really like chocolate. I'd be happy with a maltesers calendar Grin

I want to get DD a reusable one this year, as she'll be 1 and can use it every year until it falls to pieces.

FredaFox · 30/08/2020 18:06

You can pick the Yankee up pretty cheap, ive got them my mum in the past, if you have a google you can often get previous years a lot cheaper than direct at yankee

Oooh tea!! Thank you didn’t think of that!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/09/2020 10:22

Probably because we never had them when I was a child - they weren’t such a Thing - I like the traditional ones, just with little pictures, and always buy one for myself. I’ve bought the M&S beauty one for a dd who I knew would like it, though

Last year I made this reusable one for Gdcs - huge, so a major project, but they loved it. But they’ll always have a chocolate one too!

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER making my own is an option, I can then get something nice for both of us that we would use
I hate the waste of the ones where you get a bottle opener, mini playing cards. Rather have something useful

Did you get it?? If not, I honestly wouldn't bother. I got it last year and it was complete junk. The bracelet and charms turned bronze within a week and the earrings were so painful I had to put clear nail varnish on them. Definitely NOT Swarovski either.

The little cloth calendar itself was quite cute but you could get it in Poundland.😭

Wow that is really beautiful. Lucky grandchildren!! I love the picture ones too for nostalgia reasons. I buy my mum a different Nativity picture one each year (she is very holy).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/09/2020 11:55

I’m sure I saw a cheese one somewhere last year - M&S? I could go for that - you’d have to keep it somewhere really cool, though.
