I want to get a camera for my 5 year old. This one has really good reviews but seems really cheap so wondering if it's not that good. She's only 5 and out Christmas budget isn't huge. Anyone have this one or recommend a different one?

I have an extremely similar one. They're often reduced down to around £8 so I wouldn't spend £20, and they're really not worth it. The battery life is so poor it makes it almost unusable, but my daughter did enjoy it. It was just a stocking filler for her though, I think you'd be disappointed with it if it's intended for a main gift.

Spam88 · 06/08/2020 11:42

Oh I should add that my daughter was 2. I think it would be too small for a 5 year old tbh. I'll try and find it and take a picture for you for scale!

I have normal size hands, not big man hands despite how they look compared to the camera 😂

Last post honestly 😂 for £20 I wonder if you could pick up a normal basic digital camera in argos/supermarket?

We have the vtech kids selfie camera its really good and they can do pictures and videos plus add special effects. Its about £35 but I would keep an eye out for offers and you should be able to get it for cheaper. It doesn't use batteries its rechargable

Voiceofreason92 · 06/08/2020 12:12

We have that camera. Its very basic and takes rubbish pictures. Cant zoom in to focus. Dont bother. Ziddizoom cameras are often reduced before christmas. I have a camelcamelcamel alert on them as last year, they dropped to £25 and i missed it

newphoneswhodis · 06/08/2020 12:37

Ok. Thanks. I guess I'll keep looking. She gets two main presents for Xmas one from me and one from Father Christmas. Totally £50 each. So wouldn't want to spend more than £30. (She also has a birthday a week before so it gets too expensive otherwise)

What's camelcamelcamel?

The vtech kids camera is very good. My son got it for his 3rd bday and still uses it now he's nearly 6. It has games, selfie mode, editing and very easy for little ones to navigate.

valentinoandme · 06/08/2020 12:44

camelcamelcamel is a site where you can see how much items on Amazon have been sold at for the past few months/years so you can see if they're likely to go down from the current price.

newphoneswhodis · 06/08/2020 12:51

Thanks. I'll do a bit more research. Glad I'm starting early.

Highly recommend camelcamelcamel. You set up an alert for the item you want. It emails you when said item is at a price youre willing to pay

Kiddizoom. I got one for my 3 yo last year before Christmas for about £25 reduced from £40 from Amazon. He loves it and it's hardy enough to withstand rough play. It will grow with him too, there's games and different effects and stuff.

newphoneswhodis · 08/08/2020 18:33

Is it this one?

That's the one :) comes in blue as well.

cautiouscovidity · 08/08/2020 19:32

Whatever you go for, don't buy too early as the warranty would expire 1 year from purchase. There are usually big sales around Black Friday (late November) - this would be a good time to buy.

newphoneswhodis · 08/08/2020 20:01

Great. If it goes under 30 I'll get it. Thanks all

The kiddizoom one is great, DS has had it for a few years now and it’s still going strong. If you don’t mind pre-loved, keep an eye on Facebook marketplace. A friend of mine picked one up for £10 - you can wipe the memory and it’s like new. Also the blue one is often cheaper than the pink.

JellyBellies · 08/08/2020 21:56

We bought this one a few months ago. It is currently unavailable but there are links to very similar ones. It was really good.

Another vote for the vtech kidizoom, our kids have had theirs for almost 2 years now and still going strong 👍

My Dad worked in photography and he chose thiswww.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07P9QC7B3/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=AWNCLFV78XCXD&psc=1&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-christmas-3988296-kids-camera" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07P9QC7B3/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=AWNCLFV78XCXD&psc=1 for our 9yr, we'd read reviews of kids camera's before when she was younger and been really unsure, but this is great
