Really need help for present idea for this lady

Hi,
This isn't strictly a Christmas present but I'm really really stuck with a gift idea and any help would be highly appreciated.

Just after Christmas I'm having a relative coming to stay with me from the states. It will be the first time I've ever met this relative. We do know each other pretty well, as well as you can know someone from chatting on video call, txt, ect... I'm so excited to finally meet her ❤️

Relative is female and in her early 60's. I'd like to get her a special gift to take home. I'm finding it hard to think of anything for the following reasons:

I obviously don't know her 100%(she does seem a pretty easy going lady)
She is of Mormon religion and therefore doesn't drink ect...
She is currently on a no sugar diet
She will be travelling to another part of the world after staying with me to stay with some other relatives before returning to the states. So nothing easily breakable or heavy due to luggage restrictions

I'm just at a loss really, any ideas gratefully received.
Thank you xx

Small piece of tasteful jewellery? A brooch for instance?

afferal · 20/12/2019 14:11

@onalongsabbatical I was thinking jewellery, maybe a locket or something. It didn't occur to me a brooch. That's definitely something to look at, Thank you :)

I'm mid-60s myself and I like a nice brooch. What's your budget and do you think she'd like more traditional or modern, and more restrained or more colourful? Smile

This, for instance, is beautiful and inexpensive. www.notonthehighstreet.com/silkpursesowsear/product/bird-brooch

A calendar with pics of the U.K./your local area to remind her of her trip?

EduCated · 20/12/2019 14:29

Does she look the sort that would wear a scarf? A nice British-style print (depending on taste/budget, Cath Kidston, Liberty or National Trust gift shop style?)

Whereabouts does she live in the US? I'm wondering whether where she lives is too hot for a nice pair of leather gloves, for example, or a shawl / scarf.

What’s your budget?

Halcyon Days do a pair of mugs called “The Special Relationship” - Brit & American.

They’re gorgeous but (gulp) £70.

(Sorry...just noticed not easily breakable, so not a brilliant suggestion).

A lovely blanket or wrap or neck pillow for travelling.

@onalongsabbatical she loves hummingbirds as they nest in her porch every year and I was thinking of a hummingbird brooch then clicked on your link and it was a bird brooch 😂😂😂 id say £25-£30. Definitely thinking brooch is a great idea. Thank you

@ChiaraRimini great idea also, just don't know if I'd have time to get that done before she leaves but definitely an idea to bare in mind. Thank you

How much do you wish to spend.

Something very British like a Liberty scarf.

afferal · 20/12/2019 14:40

She lives in California. My late great uncle is her father and he was British so British connection gifts are good idea too.

Thank you so far for everyone's suggestions xx
