For those on board the raclette bandwagon

I'm due to pick it up tomorrow. Will use for guests coming on Saturday. Can someone walk me through this please. So I cook potoroos in a pan. Then the little serving dishes underneath are to melt raclette cheese (anything else?). And the top bit - does it actually cook food? Eg raw prawns or beef? The suggestions online seem to be cured meat - ie does it need to be something already cooked and this is just warming it through? I know I know. I'm such a sheep for buying without knowing what I'm doing. Don't get me started on the two whackamoles.

Have you got the racelett cheese? Just saying as I spotted some in Tesco for the first time ever!

It does raw meat too.
Any cheese will work in the pans . we also add peppers and mushrooms too.

PILs have been having raclette on Christmas Eve since the early 90s, though they only got the gadget a few years ago. They don’t do meat cooked on the top as it’s too smoky, just the cheese grilled underneath. Boiled potatoes, pickles, cured meats, salad if you want it

We always have raclette cheese. Waitrose have been doing it for years, nice to know other supermarkets now have it

margotsdevil · 16/12/2019 13:25

We do potatoes, peppers, onions (carmelised in a frying pan first) and mushrooms in the little pans. Cook steak or prawns on the top.

You've made me want some now and it would upset all my menu planning!

Thank you. So the top bit actually cooks then? Am ridiculously excited. Wish I'd bought an 8 pan now as this one has six and there are 8 of us. Sigh.

Did you get a bargain raclette? I managed not to twitch but now after reading this I find myself wanting one!!

Love raclette
We always have gherkins, baby new potatoes, vine tomatoes, sweet peppers, and cured meats. Yummy!

Coffeeandcrumpet · 16/12/2019 15:57

We do thin strips of marinated steak, prawns cured meats, kids sometimes gave frankfurters on there, all sorts of cheese, onions peppers, crusty bread salad, ours is a bit of a anything goes raclette free for all but we love it. Have never tried potato tho will give that a go. Have been doing it for years, hands down the kids favourite meal (this.may be because we always crack open a bottle of wine and it generally ends in games and general silliness! Enjoy

We also bought one from lidl. Have done peppers grilled on top, chicken pieces, mushrooms in pans with butter, sausages and gammon chunks. Didn't find it smoky to cook either. Cheese wise.. elemental and gouda were nice as is raclette (waitrose has it on offer at the mo and it's got a long date)

IvinghoeBeacon · 16/12/2019 19:47

It will be fine with just six once you’ve got the first slices out the way - as long as everyone puts a piece of cheese back under once they have taken one. Some eat faster than others so there’s usually one ready as soon as someone has finished

"Wish I'd bought an 8 pan now as this one has six and there are 8 of us."

🤦‍♀️

Return it and get an 8 slot one.

Whenever I've had raclette we've cooked thin slices of meat on it - they cook quickly. Little rounds of bacon work well.
