Ideas for 9yo boy

I'm struggling to think what to get my son (9). He's recently had a birthday and is not really into anything apart from playing Minecraft and watching videos of people playing Minecraft. He also likes chess, but had a few chess books for his birthday and my dad is getting him a chocolate chess set.

I have got him some books (he does like reading). I don't want to buy him stuff for the sake of it, but at the moment his sister has got much more.

What about a Lego set that features Minecraft? I'm pretty sure I've seen those around?

Or, a macarno set?

GhostsToMonsoon · 07/12/2019 19:16

Thanks - he isn't that mad on Lego, but I will look at the Minecraft sets, and maybe the Technic.

A Kindle?

What books does he like? My ds is similar age and likes Harry Potter and Diary of a Wimpy Kid so he is getting some stationery related to HP and a Wimpy Kid card game and activity book and in the past has had Slytherin pyjamas, Hogwarts travel mug etc.

Or what about a game like Rummikub or Boggle or Uno?

Harry Potter children's book set? Harry Potter or minecraft onesie?

BlackSwanGreen · 07/12/2019 19:53

Minecraft pyjamas
My DS likes hot wheels and I am getting him a Tobbie robot
Boomtrix

There's quite a bit of Minecraft stuff on etsy, hoodies and that kind of thing. 9yo are hard to buy for!

christmassymcchristmas · 07/12/2019 20:11

Primark has minecraft stuff too

ILikTheBred · 07/12/2019 20:36

My DS (who is big into Minecraft) has asked for gravitrax, hexbugs and boomtrix (he has a birthday at Christmas so effectively gets double presents).

He’s also asked for a Roblox play set (which looks like a big waste of money to me but hopefully he will get some use out of it).

ILikTheBred · 07/12/2019 20:37

Rubik’s Race has also gone down really well - might be an option if he likes chess.

I’ve got a 9yo boy. He’s getting a new tablet (his current one is years old and also smashed screen, we didn’t get a massively expensive one think about £80).
A gorilla onesie Grin
Treasure X tin (comes with little figures by the looks of it, was on his Xmas list)
Remote control car (fury cross or something?)
A set of David Walliams books (v good price on the book people site in fact all books on there are)
Then he’ll have a stocking with little bits like bed socks, Xmas choc, elec toothbrush, personalised book etc

GhostsToMonsoon · 08/12/2019 17:32

Thanks for all the suggestions. I hadn't heard of Boomtrix or Gravitrax. The Rubik's Race looks good and he could have some Minecraft clothes as he does need some bigger things. He's listened to all the Harry Potters in the car but hasn't actually 'read' them. He likes books like David Walliams, Wimpy Kid, Dark Lord, Alex Rider and other books by Anthony Horowitz, Stick Dog, Captain Underpants, BeastQuest, How to Train Your Dragon, Dog Man and I've got him 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'. I have tried to get him to read some of the books I used to love as a child, to no avail! He is quite a voracious reader so maybe a Kindle wouldn't be a bad idea. The only trouble is that they can't take Kindles to school, but then he doesn't take usually home reading books in anyway.

My 9 yr old DS loves Minecraft and watching youtubers playing minecraft so I've got him some merchandise from his favourite youtubers eg Stampy and MumboJumbo.

RagingBall · 08/12/2019 23:44

Mine is similar - he has:
Minecraft books
Guiness book of records
Latest David walliams book
Onesie
Toiletries
HP/minecraft clothes

Kindles was a great buy for my ds at that age he read books he would have dismissed as too big physically.. we caught the paperweight cos hate fix on lights

BikeRunSki · 09/12/2019 09:22

Labyrinth (board game) was a massive hit when DS was 9.
