Is 10yo too old for build-a-bear?

My DD (6) was recently given one from an aunt and absolutely loved the whole experience.

Her cousin (on the other side) who is 10 saw it and said rather wistfully that some of her friends had one, but she'd never done it.

I was thinking of getting it for DNiece for Christmas, but not sure whether it would still have that magic at 10yo. Do any parents of 10yo girls have any advice? It's within budget, but it is expensive so I'd only want to get that if she' d really love it.

I think you just have to ask her, OP. Ten year olds vary hugely in what they like. Just ask, 'Would you like to go to build a Bear for Christmas?' Then take her either during the run up or afterwards.

I don't think it's too old, no, but it's not my opinion that matters.

My 10yo boy would still love it. If she's expressed an interest, sounds perfect!

livingthegoodlife · 22/11/2019 09:10

Not too old. I bet she'd love it.

I don't think 10 is too old, especially if she has expressed an interest.

I bloody loved it when I did my first build a best at 24 without kids.
Think it sounds like a lovely present.

My mum took me when I was 25! We loved it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 22/11/2019 09:22

Build a Bear is my Dad’s favourite place and he’s in his late sixties lol. If she expressed an interest offer to take her but I would make this part of a neice / aunty shopping trip rather than a Christmas present

My 9 year old likes to play with toys for younger kids as it makes her feel less responsible, 10 is certainly not too old for a bear. She may not tell her friends about it but who cares?

Galvantula · 22/11/2019 09:25

No my 10 year old DS would go back like a shot.

Especially if she's expressed an interest, I bet she'd love it. :)

DD has several, bought by her own money mostly and she is 12 now. The last one came beginning of the year.

My 10 (almost 11) would love it.

Is your niece mature for her age? Into tech/gadgets etc? If she is then maybe not.

My dd is still into dolls, playmobil, lego etc

Kaykay066 · 22/11/2019 09:58

My 18 year old still has a bear my sister got him when he was page boy at her wedding when he was 4. Middle son has a build a Dino he got in Florida he’s 14 still loves him. And my youngest 2 are 8&9 and have a number of bears from build a bear and a few dinosaurs from Florida and def not too old if I your niece likes them. Would be a lovely aunt/niece shopping trip to pick out etc

Thanks for the reassurance everyone, I'm really pleased that it seems it should be OK.

@GrumpyHoonMain - I love that your dad enjoys it! Have to say, I found it really lovely too Smile

I'd rather not ask her ahead of time, since I like it being a surprise. She's not really into tech and gadgets, and still really likes playing with toys. Last year, she asked her parents for a scruff-a-luv so certainly last year she still liked cuddly toys. But she's changing fast! I think I'll go for it, but make a home-made voucher with a promise to take her, so that if she isn't keen I can get her something different instead.

Not at all. I bought cuddly toys with my own money as a young teen. And I had cuddly toys bought for me right up to my early twenties. I got given a build a bear at 32!

My DD is a mature 9.5 and I love seeing her playing with dolls and her bears.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/11/2019 11:56

I got Dd one for her first Christmas, he's a monkey.
She's 18 now and has moved out and we swap monkey between our houses!

My DD (10) is taking two friends there instead of having a birthday party.

She has been asking to go instead of a party for the last 3/4 years, but it's an hour's drive to our nearest city that has one, and DD's birthday is 3 days before Christmas, so haven't been brave enough until now to take her and her friends that close to Christmas!

Part of her selection process when choosing who to invite was considering who would still like BaB and who it would be too babyish for! I feel this is maybe the last year she'll want to do it. So I think it very much depends on the child (long answer to say that 😂).
