Tablet for eight year old?

I’m looking at getting ds a new tablet for Christmas (his old one is dying a death atm). Previously we just got cheap Alba ones but I’d like to get one a bit better this time because the Alba one is very slow and frustrating particularly on drawing and writing apps (ds likes using them the most!).

Can anyone recommend a good tablet? I’ve heard the amazon fire for kids is good but then I’ve also heard that it can be slow too. I was looking at the 8inch one for £129.99 but I don’t want to pay that much if ends up being as rubbish as the £50 Alba one.

Or is it a case of saving up and getting the cheapest iPad if I want to guarantee that it isn’t a slow tablet? It’s more money then I’d want to spend on Christmas but he does take care of his tablets so if I could get a few years use out of it, it would be worth it.

Can anyone give me any tips?

The amazon fire is good but I wouldn't bother with the kids one. Get the adult one for £50, or normally half this on Black Friday, then lock it down for anything you're not happy about. Plenty of parental control apps and settings available

I wouldn't get the kids fire for an 8 year old. It's aimed more at 3-5 year olds I'd say. Just get a regular fire if you go for that.

However, having both in the house, I would say the ipad is incomparably better.

If he’s careful, I’d get him an iPad, especially if he uses it for drawing. Dd1 had a Tesco Hudl years ago when she was 6/7 but got her an iPad when she was 9/10 and there’s just no comparison. My twins have just turned 7 and got the kids kindle last year and it’s fine for what they use it for now but yes, they’re a bit slow and I don’t kind them easy to navigate.

All four of mine have kindle fires they can be as low as £30 on Black Friday / prime day

Just be careful with them pulling out the chargers too roughly

We've always been happy with our samsung tablets

DD had a Samsung Galaxy Tab A for Christmas a couple of years ago and it's been fab. It was about £150 on Black Friday. It's got great battery life, you can add extra memory and is very easy to navigate.
