My Ds talks about wanting to be a photographer on and off .

He uses phone for photos .

Just looking for a way to do an online course or anything to see if it’s more than a fleeting thought before shelling out in a decent camera . Any ideas

Most photography course would require a camera where you can change settings (appature, iso and speed) rather then spending on a full dslr camera you can buy bridge camera, where you have a smaller range of the settings (wont get techincal) you can get them second hand quite cheaply. Photography is very different off the phone, but a good course that teaches how to use the camera is where you need to start.

Forgot to say it might be better buying beginner books (photography for dummies etc..) as a starting point for him rather thrn a course.

Buy a 2nd hand dslr, you can get one for £6-£100 (canon 1000d is a good starter) and then get the photography for dummies book. You maybe able to find someone local that could offer lessons. You tube videos are also great for learning 🤣. I mainly self taught with a bit of help from YouTube and a lot of practice.

There’s a guy that does videos (pretty sure they are on YouTube), his name is Jared Polin, he explains how to use settings and he’s a pretty cool guy, makes it run and easy.

Is there anything in particular he likes taking photos of? People, wildlife. Landscape etc..?

DIY.org have a photograph lessons. It is fairly pricey though.

YouTube is probably your best bet. We home educate and use YouTube tutorials for so many things.

He likes taking pictures of graffiti ???
He talks of taking pictures for estate agents for a job .

I really don’t know if it’s a passing phase but I think he needs to explore it but not spend a fortune .

Just been looking up the cannon 1000d . Does he need the lenses with bit to start or just a standard camera ?

A day trip to Manchester would be good. My colleague loves graffiti and has taken loads of pics of fab art - search graffiti Manchester.

Starlight456 · 13/11/2019 22:10

Ooh thank you for that . We visited Iceland in January there was some amazing graffiti there

The cannon 1000d needs a lens, sometimes you can buy them with the camera or if you buy separate you can get a lens for around £20-£30 ,the lens you need is a 18mm - 55mm cannon lens, that lens is good enough to begin with (will take portrait , macro and landscape shots), if he gets into it he can buy other lenses (zoom and wide angle) but for now one lens is fine.

Groupon often do a course through shaw academy for around £20, it’s a good online course to learn about how the settings work and how to take good photos.

Lovemusic33 · 13/11/2019 22:31

The lens would be perfect for taking graffiti photos.
I mainly photograph wildlife so I use a big zoom lens which cost me a small fortune 🤣

If you want a trip to london, there is a tunnel called Leake Street near waterloo station that is full of amazing graffiti.
Ive recently bought a Nikon B700 on ebay. Its a great little bridge camera with an amazing zoom lens. It would be ideal as a starter camera.
