Gifts in the work place?!

So last year I made the mistake of buying literally everyone gifts at work. I'll be honest, without being hounded by my next line... we are a small close bunch at work so I was expecting a small gesture from a few but didn't.
I didn't spend loads, just stocking filler type gifts. I spent quite a bit on my work bestie who didn't get me anything, I don't give to receive but I made effort on her birthday too because I wanted to however it was my birthday a month after hers and I didn't get anything. This year I've decided I'm not going mad again which DH agreed and was quite annoyed at my gestures/spending money. However, what if I do get something from someone and Ive got them nothing?! I know they didn't care about that last year but I'd feel awkward so do I buy a few gifts, take them in work and if someone gives me something I'll write their name on the tag and pretend I got them something? Aswell for my work 'bestie' I wasn't going to get anything like last year and just give her a cheapy if she gives me something.
is that the best thing to do? I know this is so trivial but I feel like I get presents/gestures really wrong as I enjoy buying gifts a Xmas so can go overboard.
DH suggested a big box of biscuits and let everyone help themselves...? What do you guys think?

God no! Presents sounds way over the top. Tin of biscuits or chocs to share sounds perfect and gets everyone in the festive spirit.

Wow that sounds like hard work, and you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you expect things back.

Tin of biscuits sounds the way to go!

A tin of biscuits / chocolates for everyone to share is plenty enough.

I love Christmas. I do cards for my team and usually bake at some point near Christmas and take that in. Presents is over the top.
