Alcohol Present Ideas

We are at a point where we really dont know what Christmas presents to get the family so we thought alcohol presents might be a good idea as they all like a tipple or two. Apart from the DCs who will get the usual toys, etc...

These are people that literally have everything but they still want to get a gift nonetheless. We tried the give whatever we can afford to charity but it was met with very little enthusiasm. A couple of years ago we tried the only DCs get pressies from us but this had a few upset family members on the day; even after we had told them for over 2 months that this was our intention and do here we are; getting presents that hopefully wont end up at the back of the cupboard or drawers.

We host Christmas as none of the others are keen on hosting so it does cost us a bit already. We do however enjoy the hosting and I always look forward to it as its lovely having my mum around for a few days, chatting and generally getting into the merriment of it all.

We would like some slightly different ideas for spirits, wines and any other ideas out there. We gave my PIL the quarterly delivery of craft gin last year and they loved but I'm afraid we can't afford that level of spending this year.

Any ideas out there? Please share

We got my SIL and BIL some stuff in the Oliver bonas sale, two cut glass glasses and an empty bottle with gin barrel chips in it, and then a nice 35cl bottle of vodka to go with it. The point being they pour the vodka into the gin chips bottle and leave it for a few months and it makes an aged liquor. The whole lot cost about £25 but obviously a cheaper vodka would bring the price down. Looks really cool as a set.

M&S have some quirky flavours. There's a snow-globe style gin with gold flakes.

drspouse · 07/10/2019 22:12

Could you make some Christmas pudding or sloe or damson gin?

Pipandmum · 07/10/2019 22:12

How about making up some sloe gin? Or another flavour. Get some nice bottles from Ikea (with the kilner type closing). You could even print your own labels! As you are hosting you don’t want to be spending loads and this is not too expensive.

I make my own vodkas to give as gifts. This year I’m making a chilli vodka. I’ve grown the chillies and it’s a way of using them up.
Not everyone likes homemade stuff but it seems to go down well ( and elatively cheap gift).

The gin one is now out of stock, but here is the whisky barrel one. You can also find them other places, they’re called snippers.

@SkintSanta thank you for that link. Those are perfect for my brother and FIL

@NeitherNowtNorSummat01glad to help. Thought they seemed like a pretty good present idea. Not just the standard bottle of booze or booze related gift.

WagtailRobin · 08/10/2019 02:31

Kane's golden rum, the bottle is quite quirky, and really stands out; I bought a bottle in Tesco's on Saturday it was on special for £12, usually £15. The bottle definitely draws the eye if you're looking for something different. They are also doing bog standard Bailey's on special at the moment (they were on Saturday anyway).

Skintsanta I will definitely be using this idea for FIL and maybe if I can get the gin for MIL and SIL. Thank you.

@skintsanta so if I get the whisky ones instead, the concept is that I can add gin or vodka to the chips or does it have to be a particular spirit? I really like this idea.

@Ronniepasas - DONE! Got the malbec port for BIL. He loves port and he loves malbec.

Have a look at Masters of Malt website. They do miniatures of gins, whisky, vodkas & others which vary in price. I've done a few hampers with their selections (only done gin hampers but they were good & went down well). I also bought stuff from drinkstuff.com (muddlers, unusual glasses, gin botanicals etc) & found some tonics & mixers I hadn't heard of before to add (can't remember where I bought them but a google search would help).

SkintSanta · 08/10/2019 09:55

@Notyetthere it tells you on the bottle which spirits to use, so for the gin bottle it was vodka or jiniver, I’m not sure for the whisky bottle, but I reckon the snippers website would tell you

SkintSanta · 08/10/2019 10:15

Or genever even. Long night with the baby last night.

There is a site for an Amsterdam based shop that has the gin, whisky and rum versions in. €12.50 a bottle. Would be worth it with exchange rate and delivery added if ordering more than one bottle. You add vodka or genever to all three options, then let the chips do there thing.

snippers here

I make after eight vodka most years as it gets drunk so quickly. My DH has also made the Hairy Bikers Christmas vodka and some blackberry vodka. I'm just about to make coffee rum for DD (adult) for her Christmas present.
