What cheeses did you have on your cheese board?

I had a small piece of stilton (still not keen on it!), Brie, and wensleydale with cranberries. Plus cheddar and red leicester already in the fridge.

It's not very exciting though so I'd like some suggestions for something new to try next Christmas, please Xmas Smile

We had:

A Stilton (that the cheesemonger assured me was “perfect for eating right now” Hmm But it was actually divine!)
Epoisses
Tomme de Chevre
Durrus (a bit like Reblouchon but Irish)
A gorgeous Sussex Cheddar

And some Gouda and Port Salut for the stink-o-phobes!

I always make the river cottage Christmas chutney so we had that, some grapes, figs and walnuts on the board too.

I’ve been too full to start on the cheese board before tonight , forgot have Brie as well.

PARunnerGirl · 29/12/2018 19:26

@smallinthesmoke Just saw you had Durrus too! Did you enjoy it? This was my first time having it and I really liked it. I was talked into it by the cheesemonger after a taste in the shop because they only did whole or half rounds of Reblouchon (too much for me) and he thought Durrus was quite similar.

Strong cheddar
Camembert
Brie
Chèvre
Stilton
Dolcelatte
Mexicana

We are amateurs, tbh.

Goldenphoenix · 29/12/2018 21:36

Jarlsberg
Brie
St Agur
Cheddar
Boursin
Delicious!

Smallinthesmoke · 29/12/2018 23:06

@parunnergirl
Bloody loved it. It's all about getting the age just right so it is soft but not too soft. I find it so clever how cheesemongers are able to plan so their cheeses are perfectly aged for Christmas week.
Mmmmmmmm cheese

RaisinRainbow · 30/12/2018 10:20

Don't usually go for cheese but had a fantastic ooey-gooey and delightfully pungent chevre from Tesco no less! Plus DH had brought some unusual hard unpasteurised cheese from Austria, sweet and nutty rather like a Comte. Plus a fairly non-description camembert and a good wedge of Wensleydale, I dont remember the rest as he is in charge!

We served with Austrian spelt bread, that looked medieval and weighed a kg it was so dense! And delicious toasted with unsalted goats butter

Definitely gave me a dairy hangover the following day, but I would say it was worth it.

Two types of Stilton
Brie
Gouda
Strong cheddar
Smoked cheese
Wensleydale

Two types of chutney
Green grapes

PARunnerGirl · 30/12/2018 11:30

@RaisinRainbow I’d have been a very happy guest at that table! Sounds delicious.

XiCi · 30/12/2018 19:17

@BrieAndChilli where did you buy your Y Fenni? I absolutely love it and can never find it anywhere!!

We had
Brie
Morbier
Yorkshire Blue
Mature Cheddar
Cheddar with chilli
Lancashire with cranberries
Boursin
Also pate and various chutneys

Also bought a cheddar and cider baked fondue from M&S and a Stilton and Fig one from Lidl. Both absolutely delicious.

BrieAndChilli · 30/12/2018 20:16

@XiCi I found it in the Morrison’s in Newport!! I was so excited. I hadnt been able to find it for a couple of years since there was a fire at the factory!

XiCi · 30/12/2018 20:55

Thanks Brie, there's a Morrisons near to where I work so will take a look tomorrow!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 30/12/2018 21:05

Various snowdonia cheese varieties......
Black bomber
Red devil
Green thunder
A Red Leicester one

  • a couple of others we haven't got to yet Stilton; Cropwell Bishop Brie

I really recommend snowdonia cheese, it's lovely stuff. Also Wookey Hole caves might be shit but their cave aged cheddar is amazing.

BiddyPop · 01/01/2019 17:16

Stilton
Shropshire Blue
Brie
Comte (18 months mature)
Hegarty’s cheddar

Only slivers left of most, and they’ll be finished off at the next sitting.

BiddyPop · 01/01/2019 17:18

We also bought a Carrigaline with garlic and herbs but haven’t opened it yet, sealed in wax, so will eat that in january (we love lots of cheese, year round...)

NoWordForFluffy · 01/01/2019 17:20

So do we, Biddy (it's a good job too!). 🧀🧀🧀🧀😂

buckeejit · 01/01/2019 20:07
