Looking to get DH a new game for Christmas, but not sure what to get! We’re fairly ‘gamey’, so has anyone got any suggestions based on the list below?!

Games we like and play:
7 Wonders
Pandemic
Carcassone
Ex Libris
The Village
Saboteur
Revolution!

Games we like but don’t seem to get round to playing:
Hive
Settlers of Catan

Games he doesn’t like: Dobble. Vehemently so HmmGrin

Ticket to Ride is probably my back up, and maybe 7 Wonders Duel, bit any suggestions for something a bit different?

Labyrinth isn’t bad, if you want one that older kids can play too.

Or Cards against Humanity, if you want a filthy one that’s quite funny but definitely adults only...!

No children involved, so complicated is ok! CAH tends to be one we play in the pub Grin

Suburbia is good, as is agricola but think I prefer suburbia (possibly because I almost always win at it Grin)

Ticket to Ride
Splendour

Takenoko
Tsuro

Both good games, Tsuro can be short but it’s fun to play a few rounds.

Completely different genre of board game, but we just bought Blockbusters and even DH played and enjoyed himself - he has never once joined in with any board games in the 20 years I have known him. It is retro and the questions are fairly easy, but it is good fun and entertained 7 people aged between 18 and 69 for an evening.

I would also suggest takenoko. Gets a lot of play here as it works well for 2 players without just being tit for tat.

I’ve got my eye on Pandemic Legacy (hoping DH picks up on my hints for Christmas) - basically it’s 12 games (supposedly each covering a month of the pandemic) and depending on how the previous games go affects what happens in each instalment. We have friends we game with regularly and I love the idea of us playing each instalment as we go.

We bought Sagrada this year (building your stain glass window by picking panes and trying to scupper other people from completing their window template - it’s a weird premise but a very satisfying mixture of logic problem and screwing over your friends). I love Code Names by DH doesn’t (his brain doesn’t really work that way we’ve decided!)

Are you normally playing as a two? If so we love Tokaido - a beautiful artwork / simple mechanic game. Lords of Waterdeep is a great resource management game that we come back to a lot. We also have the DC Deckbuilding card game set and a load of expansions which is fun (albeit not technically a board game I suppose!). Ditto Munchkin - lots of different themed flavours and a very fun game for a group.

Have you checked out Boardgamegeek.com for the reviews / feedback / YouTube playthroughs of things you’re interested in? Quite handy for an overview.

Tsuro is my current fav for two players.
For larger groups I love Codenames, Secret Hitler and Decrypto.

Thanks for this thread OP and all the suggestions everyone. I've just ordered Takenoko for DH for Christmas.

We love Pandemic, and have a few of the spin offs like Cthulhu and Iberia. We like Flashpoint, which is a nice cooperative game. Something we don't have yet but I really want to get is The Captain is Dead!
