DCs 15, 12 and 9 want a gaming console for Christmas (eldest is least interested). But which? Can anyone run me through the pros and cons? TIA.

You need to find out what their friends have - so they can link up

TheGirlWhoLived · 08/12/2018 13:56

And the games they want to play is important... things like first person shooters are going to be better on PS4/ Xbox, mario kart and Zelda are only available on switch

consoleconfusion · 08/12/2018 14:08

They like construction and mystery type games more than shooters. Friends seem to have a mixture of consoles.

I’d go for an Xbox. PS4 games seem to be for older age. Switch is good and although it can be played on tv it’s not really a sharing console as I think it tends to be used more as a handheld device.

JemSynergy · 09/12/2018 17:32

Xbox over Playstation. My son has the Xbox One but I have bought him the Switch this year for Christmas. However, he will be able to connect to more of his friends on his Xbox.

ifiwasabutterfly · 09/12/2018 17:49

Check out what their friends have. If they are wanting to play online with their friends at some point they will all need to have the same console.

Given their ages I would say ps4 or xbox

TheGirlWhoLived · 09/12/2018 19:50

I’d probably go for an Xbox- particularly construction/ Roblox/ older Lego games then you can have a variety!

Escolar · 09/12/2018 19:55

Place marking as I have the same question!

I thought that different types of consoles are now able to link up and 'speak' to each other, so that it doesn't matter what their friends have? Is that incorrect?

WatchingTheWheels85 · 09/12/2018 19:59

Ds 11 is having a ps4 and ds 6 is having a switch.

ghostsandghoulies · 10/12/2018 12:38

@Escolar Most games can't be played cross platform but it's a feature coming to some games (like Fortnite) in the future. PC people can play with Xbox or PS people but Xbox can't play against PS.

Generally PS and Xbox have the same games so go with what their friends have. Nationally there are more PS than Xbox consoles.

ghostsandghoulies · 10/12/2018 12:45

Just had a Google and you can play Fortnite cross platform now. Oops

cancla · 10/12/2018 12:49

Switch is good and although it can be played on tv it’s not really a sharing console

DS plays with another 2 players every Saturday so it can very much be a sharing console.

slappinthebass · 10/12/2018 12:57

Are there not any games they want in particular that can guide you? It's all about Pokemon for mine so easy to go with a Switch.

Daisy2315 · 11/12/2018 12:25

At dd’s school she has said most have the PS4

redfruitgum · 11/12/2018 12:31

They are probably too old for the Nintendo. I'd try and find out which console of the xbox or playstation most of their friends have so they can link up with each other to play games. They seem to be relatively similar in price otherwise.

cancla · 11/12/2018 13:30

Too old for Nintendo?

Why?

redfruitgum · 11/12/2018 13:32

Nintendo seem to excel in cartoony sort of games, which is probably for the primary school age range. They don't seem to do first person shooters or racing sims so well as xbox or ps4.

rach2713 · 11/12/2018 13:42

My son is 11 and has had the old Xbox but stopped working as it was second hand so we bought him a PS4 for his Xmas 3 years ago and he has loved that he was lent my dads Xbox one and used that for a little while but he liked the PS4 where as my husband likes the Xbox one (his own one).

Van you not try and drop hints on what they would like or what there friends have..

Angelinthenight · 11/12/2018 14:12

Ps4 seems to be a fave here, thats what we ended up getting.

BarbedBloom · 11/12/2018 15:45

PS4. Better exclusives, lots of variety with games

HollySwift · 11/12/2018 17:23

it's a feature coming to some games (like Fortnite) in the future. PC people can play with Xbox or PS people but Xbox can't play against PS

It’s definitely possible to play fortnite across platforms now - I have one child on a PS4 in one room and one on an Xbox One in the other doing just that right now.
