Any recommendations? Kids 12 & 14 plus us grown ups. Love exploding kittens that came highly recommended on here last year so thought I’d try again.

MNHQ Update
We appreciate this thread is a little old now, but if you’ve come across it while on the hunt for similar recommendations, our guide to the best board games has been recently updated to reflect current availability and new releases. It’s been compiled based on advice from Mumsnet users as well as consumer reviews with fun for the whole family in mind. We hope it’s helpful! Flowers

Pandemic is always good for a group - its a straight forward game and is a collaboration so a different style.
We have played lots of games of Dominion, 7 Wonders (and their various expansion packs) which are great - although after a few years am a bit bored of 7 Wonders
Quick games to consider (not sure on upper capacity for these) Love Letters, Conditierre (so not spelt that right!)
Just bought FlameRouge which is a fun game based on cycling!

Shut up and Sit down is a good website with videos of play throughs and reviews of a heap of games..

I've got teenage children and a board gamer husband. To add to the list above, we like Ticket to Ride and Terraforming Mars as a family. Camel Up is good fun and can play with a large group. I'm rubbish at Codenames but the rest of the family love it!

Our local board game shop is very helpful with suggestions - if you have one near you, pop in and ask.

Curlygirl42 · 05/12/2018 23:03

Linkee is really good and we also like Articulate.

Justbenice1 · 06/12/2018 00:28

Carcassonne (and it's many expansions -we got the big box after starting off with the basic set) is a real favourite in this house. Me, hubby, 13 and 14 yo boys play.
We also like; sheriff of Nottingham, labyrinth, ticket to ride, tsuro, maori for board games.
For word games we like; boggle, bananagrams, scrabble, and the picture tike game Quirkle
For card games we like (some we play with the 6yo too) sleeping queens, super tooth, port Royal, jaipur (2 player), uno, exploding kittens, gloom, set, gubs, dobble and dragon wood...
Family fun games (to play with gp too) are; articulate, balderdash, Sherlock Holmes 221b baker street, name five, pictionary and scattergories.

I could go on sorry. We live games in our house. We play at least 2/3 times a week

Bears vs Babies is made by the same people as Exploding Kittens.

Karwomannghia · 06/12/2018 08:23

Cranium is good fun

Hotchox · 06/12/2018 08:29

Yes, if you've got a local board game shop, pop in, explain the sort of thing you're looking for and ask them for recommendations. That has always worked for me - and you might even spot something that looks fun while you're there. :-)

Our local shop has sold us loads of games the kids enjoy - and the money you spend goes into the hands of someone who loves games, rather than some big shop shareholder! :-)

NoSpend19 · 06/12/2018 08:32

We are doing mainly experience gifts this year but family board games are an essential. DS1 has asked for unstable unicorns and DS2 is getting bears vs babies.

UrbaneSprawl · 06/12/2018 08:37

Celestia is good to play as a family, as there’s a bit of “how much do you trust your brother not to stitch you up” involved. The artwork is also really lovely.

We’ve also been playing Isle of Skye quite a bit recently. It’s a bit more involved than some of the games you mention, but I like the way that every game is very different, as what you score points for is determined by what comes out of the bag.

Willlowthewasp · 06/12/2018 09:33

Dixit

Titsywoo · 06/12/2018 09:39

Speak out is hilarious!

Titsywoo · 06/12/2018 09:40

I've just bought What do you Meme for Xmas. Apparently the mature cards are in a separate pack so you can play without them.

ElainaElephant · 06/12/2018 10:38

Chameleon is a big hit here

millimat · 06/12/2018 17:20

I was going to buy exploding kittens but was shocked it was £20 for a tiny box! Is it worth it?

codenameduchess · 06/12/2018 17:29

I adore carcasonne, village is similar but has a bit of story to it (you control families through generations) and the expansions are lovely.

A few others great for family/groups are:
Pandemic
Potion explosion
Lords of water deep
Automania
Burger boss
Rhino hero superbattle
Ice cool (penguin flicking - it's fab!!)

Probably loads more but they spring to mind right now

everygalaxy · 06/12/2018 17:33

We like sushi go but it really didn’t work when we played with our friends who are vegetarian!

everygalaxy · 06/12/2018 17:35

Coup might be good with teenagers - I like it because I’m good at bluffing.

ElainaElephant · 06/12/2018 18:02

Check ebay for exploding kittens, you'll get it for less than half that, I haven't looked through many, but I see it new for, £8.95.

I looked at amazon for what do you meme, it was £28 and has since sold out, I got it for £13.99 on ebay, brand new.

2moveornot2move · 06/12/2018 18:40

I thought that last year @millimat. We got it a bit cheaper on Black Friday but yes, I would say it is worth it.

I have bought bears vs babies on ebay for half the price on Amazon. Worried now that it will either be fake tat or won't arrive in time!

Settlers of Catan. Favourite in our house. 11 & 13 years old can play now but we often play with just adults too.

cloudtree · 06/12/2018 18:54

But £20 is crazy for exploding kittens. I paid £6 last year (but it did come from china - genuine though)

Dobinette · 06/12/2018 19:04

Catan

Danteinferno · 06/12/2018 19:07

Carcassone, exploding kittens (worth the money) pandemic, fluxx, cobra paw, ticket to ride

IncomingCannonFire · 06/12/2018 19:36

One night ultimate werewolves is fun and addictive.
Carcassonne
Dice city
Pandemic
Dominion

codenameduchess · 06/12/2018 21:25

Werewolf is great for bigger groups if there's a few too
