Over the years we've had lots of kits which have often been poor quality (included the science museum branded ones) can anyone recommend something reliable?

I saw this but it's a class pack and not available individually.

Not a kit, but Usborne have an engineering lift the flap book and a scribble engineering book. They both look good.

How old?

What about Lego? You can get the "technic" kits which have moving parts or radio control trains or for older kids, there's the Mindstorm robotics.

What age? Getting my 10 and 12 yr old a soldering iron and associated kit to share under supervision of Dh.

Subscription to a kids monthly magazine called Whizz Pop Bang. These are things to make in it each month and articles to read. My almost 9 year old DS loves it.

Hot Wires is also a good set for circuit type experiments.
