How do you decorate your stairs?

First Christmas in our new home and I have lovely stairs to decorate. I can't decide if I should just put up lights or a garland with lights. How do you decorate yours?

Fairy lights wound round the banister and mezzanine landing. We are a white walls and light oak kind of house tho, I’d imagine an older house would look lovely with a garland
