Christmassy houses

How do you make your house feel christmassy? We've put the tree up and the odd little ornament etc, lights etc for outside will go up too. However I've seen other people's houses and they look like something from a magazine!
I know comparison is the third of joy etc...but I am happy with what we've got, I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or ideas to help make our house more Christmassy? Thanks.

My house never looks like one from a magazine, but I love tea lights in Christmassy holders - LED tea lights if you have little ones. I always have a Poinsettia. Do you have you Christmas cards on show?

We have 3 Christmas trees and a selection of other decorations/ornaments. We don’t bother with the outside of the house as we live in a rural location and tucked out of the way so no one really sees our house. It doesn’t look like anything from a magazine, it’s all a bit miss matched and random.

I've got a fireplace garland and stockings hung up as well. Christmas cushions on the sofa and Christmas bunting dotted about the place looks homely and christmassy. Oh and candles.

I guess those magazine looking ones are using a colour scheme? Maybe do a table feature like the German advent candle or put a load of seasonal greenery on your mantlepiece/pictures. I don't do any of these things by the way!

Oh and paper chains perhaps.

You need a colour scheme : either a metallic and a strong colour (eg gold and red), or a metallic, a neutral and an accent.

Decorate in layers : eg don’t just put a garland on the mantle but add more greenery, sprigs of berries, or pine cones and oranges or ribbon. Hang stockings, and add candle sticks to give vertical interest.

Layer a couple of throws in different fabrics and textures on the couch.

Put lights deep into the Christmas tree, not just on the edges, so it feels three dimensional.

Repeat a motif or a theme. You could for instance use poinsettias as an accent (be sparing) or have pine cones in the garlands and a comical pine cone tree on a shelf.

But more importantly, don’t have dc involved or near your decorations my home will never feature in any reputable magazine

Bake some christmassy biscuits and put on the festive music - it'll feel christmassy no matter what it looks like

Thanks all!
