She likes reading fiction but I don’t know what she has read already. I would say more contemporary fiction that classics. Also she is quite religious and I don’t want to be the one who introduced lots of sex and drugs, even in fiction. She is our babysitter and v bright but not massively academic. Any suggestions for fiction. (We got her a fun present for her bday which is close to Christmas so I would like to get her a book- yes yes also fun! - for Christmas.

It's tricky if they already read lots. Honestly I'd get a book voucher, at that age it's nice to go and pick something but may be with a book light or a literary gift like a penguin mug?

I Capture the Castle? A modern classic, but would still appeal I think. Quite grown up issues hinted at but not explicit because of the time it’s written and set.

If you post this on the books threads you’ll probably be inundated with good suggestions Smile

You could try the Water of the Hills double by Pagnol - the inspiration for Jean de Florette etc. They are good. Or the Hitchhikers series; who couldn’t like them? Don’t think they are that irreligious; it’s hard to tell as I’m a Christian but don’t get that offended.
