Different mince pies

I usually make Mary Berry's orange feathered and marzipan mince pies and/or Nigella's star topped ones. At the time I thought they were the bee's knees' but after OD'ing on them for 4 years need a change.

Any other lovely mince pies to make or any "different" mince pies to be made. Mary Berry does a frangipane one but I can't quite get my head round that.

I sometimes do my own mincemeat with glacè cherries and a smidgen of cherry brandy in it. Delish.

Aldi have black forest mince pies
They look great. Maybe you could do something along that vein?

I think the frangipan ones sound immense!

I found a Dan Lepard recipe where he uses cream cheese in the pastry for mince pies. I haven't made it, but sounds interesting...

You could try some historic recipes from when mincemeat contained actual meat: www.historicfood.com/Pie%20recipe2.htm

We got some mince pies topped with frangipane from Aldi and my OH (who tends toward preferring the traditional kind without too much embellishment) said they wee very nice indeed. He’s been back for a second box. He has one or two with a glass of calvados of an evening.

Might be worth a try at making those!

I made the Waitrose frangipane recipe - uses cream cheese in the pastry and a sort of cakey/Bakewell topping. A friend highly recommended it but, to me, it was more like a cupcake than a mince pie (this may gave been due to the Delia vegetarian mincemeat I used, which turned out rather dry.
I’ve also made the Good Housekeeping recipe from November, which has gorgeous pastry (using double cream and orange zest) and nice mincemeat but a bit too fruity for me - lots of Bramleys. I reckon, over the years, the best fillings I’ve had were shopbought but I added egg yolks and alcohol to them. Also easier than making your own.
You can also add crumble topping, that can be tasty.

I make a crumble topping with crystallised ginger in it that always goes down well (although it might just be because of the added brandy in the mincemeat!)

Streusel topping is the one I always make. Lovely and crispy and very easy to make.
