Inlaws and Christmas

My inlaws love coming to our house and staying as long as possible. They’d only leave if they had something to do at home but otherwise they’d stay at ours for weeks. And they only live an hour away.

We’re hosting Christmas this year and of course we’ve invited them but they are planning on coming from the 22nd of Dec till 1st of Jan……. That’s more than 10days!!!!! In their mind this is nice as they’d love to spend the holidays together. But having to sort breakfast, lunch and dinner for over 10days baffles me.

As they are in their mid-70s and I don’t want to be rude, how would you politely hint that we’d love to have them over for a few days but not for over 10days? :)

Thats kind of awkward. I wouldnt want my relatives staying with me that long either.

I would sugges saying you are going away between Christmas and new year, however you may have work so they will know you arent or even worse they may volunteer to house sit meaning you really do have to go away!

Easiest way to do it is to say to your other half, they are your parents over to you to have this discussion

Can you plan anything from 27 that involves a few days away. Really cheap premium inns at the moment.

GhostSauce · 26/11/2018 11:37

Tell them that you have plans with friends on the 23rd, and guests staying on the 27th, but they are welcome to come from the 24th-26th.

Don't do it over the phone so it becomes a discussion. Send a text.

Why have you given them an open invitation? It should be 'can you come from 22nd to 27th - that would be wonderful!' or however long you want them there.

but they are welcome to come from the 24th-26th.

Only really feasible if they are driving.

Publuc transport around here in this big city doesn't run on boxing day.

Decide between you and DH what suits you. Then get him to deal with it.
