Struggling for ideas for extended family. Need book, arts & craft and/or toy ideas. This age seems to be between toys and gift vouchers for shops.

Help!!

My dd just 12 likes nice stationary, slime making kit, bath bombs.

hazeyjane · 25/11/2018 18:01

Dd1 and 2 (11 and 12) love....

Percy Jackson books
Harry Potter
Town called Perfect
Mortal Engines
Dr Who
Anything Marvel especially Ant Man and Guardians of The Galaxy
Audio books (mostly Diary of a Wimpy Kid - which they know off by heart)
Bath bombs and anything from Lush or Soap and Glory
Notebooks and stationary
Art stuff
They both loved the 3D puzzle sneaker/pen holder
Socks (they love getting the nice 3 for 2 Accessorize ones or Sea salt fluffies)
Fleeced, onesies and anything snuggly
.....I could probably think of a 100 other things!

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 25/11/2018 18:10

Tiger/Flying Tiger is the shop of choice for DD11 and all her friends. They would pretty much like anything from there!

As for books - my DD reads pretty widely and I always think that less recent books are a good shout for gifts - less likely they’ll already have them. Some classics like Railway Children, Tom’s Midnight Garden, The Secret Garden would be good, or there are TONS of great books out there that aren’t the big standard Jaqueline Wilson etc. Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt is perfect for this age group and a brilliant book. Walk Two Moons is also another slightly out-there suggestion.

Ricekrispie22 · 25/11/2018 18:13

Backpack or pencil case from Smiggle
Nail varnish - my DD has a weird and wonderful collection including holographic, scented and heat changing!
My DD also likes her Tshirt from Illuminated Apparel
Lava lamp
Purse from Accessorize or Claire's
Funky earbuds or earphones
Headphones
Disney Eye Found It game
Creativity For Kids Geometric Jewellery Kit
Bracelet making kits
Lockable diary

Beaverhausen · 25/11/2018 18:16

My DD just turned 11 so we got her the sparkly Dr Marten boots, a sparkly rugsack, onesie, sparkly tablet case and headphones and books she is into art and science. Plus going through puberty I got her a few books on her body changing and how to cope with her changing moods.

For Xmas we bought her a nintendo switch with a few games, a watch with a gps tracker and so that she can make sos phone calls if she needs too. headphones, books, odd socks which she loves so I am getting her the cat ones for xmas. :)

WendyCope · 25/11/2018 18:16

Tiger is your friend!

reluctantbrit · 25/11/2018 18:22

DD is obsessed with everything Harry Potter. She also loves make up unfortunately bath bombs and fancy shower gel. She likes especially the shower mousse ones she only gets as a treat.

Books, I find it really depends on the taste. DD loves horses, murder mystery and historic fiction. Some of her friends love fantasy which DD is absolute no fan unless it is HP. I would double check or do a gift recipe if you buy a book.

DD also loves to shop at Accessorize and similar shops for jewellery.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 25/11/2018 19:21

The 11 year olds I work with all seem to be obsessed with Smiggle, I don't think you can go far wrong with anything from there or Tiger. Also slime- you can buy little pots of it or they do make your own slime craft kits on Amazon.

Taffeta · 25/11/2018 19:39

DD 12 has finally outgrown her Slime phase and is into

KPop especially BTS
Kawaii stationery
Body Shop stuff (not make up)
Typo
New Look clothes
Urban Outfitters everything!

horseymum · 25/11/2018 22:47

Top model/ miss melody Coloring/ fashion design or cute animal books. Loved by my dd11

implantsandaDyson · 25/11/2018 23:03

My just turned 11 year old likes Percy Jackson and all associated Rick Riordan spin offs, other series etc. Darkest Minds series of books have also been a success and she still loves her Lemony Snickett.
Marvel - Captain America, Black Widow, Black Panther t-shirts and Agents of Shield posters, tat etc.
She's also asked for Create this book journals.
Jewellery - She has her ears pierced so she has new earrings and apparently lockets are all the rage again.
She also has an impressive collection of Funko Pop Vinyl figures again Marvel, Stranger Things etc.
Decent colouring pencils
She likes hoodies - the smallest adult size in Primark usually doesn't drown her, she has an array of Harry Potter t-shirts and fleecy blankets.
She's not really into smellies, at a push Body Shop shower gel is her least hated Grin She doesn't do baths.

An iTunes, Amazon or Waterstones voucher is a very safe bet or a tenner in a card Grin

slappinthebass · 26/11/2018 00:11

I think at this age they can vary so much.
My 11 year old dd loves:
Anything Pokemon
Switch or DS games
Manga
Anime
Graphic novels
Anything kawaii
Obsessed with Japan
Funko Pop figures
She's not interested in make up
Not interested in fashion
Not interested in designer brands, never follows through with craft kit sets and just spreads them through her room so I hate her receiving them, likewise stationary and jewellery that gets broken or lost straight away.
Money is always going to be a hit.

SilkenTofu · 26/11/2018 06:39

Thank you Star

Also top of primary or first year secondary makes a difference. Smiggle is definitely out at secondary. Tiger is a good call or something snuggly. A hottie is useful. Notebooks, nice pens.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 26/11/2018 06:48

Should qualify that Smiggle is out at the secondaries that I know about and this is not just the cool kids.

BringBiscuits · 26/11/2018 07:03

Place marking! Thanks for these suggestions! I have a 10yo and some fantastic suggestions here.

DevonCherry · 26/11/2018 07:15

@beaverhausen - I hope it's not one of these?
MiSafes' child-tracking smartwatches are 'easy to hack' www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-46195189

EvaHarknessRose · 26/11/2018 07:41

Bullet journal and suitable pens, bullet journalling stencils etc

Beaverhausen · 26/11/2018 09:01

@DevonCherry good god thank you for that, it is yes. But I will be returning it.

Twitchintervention · 26/11/2018 09:24

My 11 year old (12 in January)

Does NOT want toys Grin (first year)
Anything rose gold and pink
Things she can squish
Tiger EVERYTHING (She almost snorted my ear off when I suggested Smiggle, though last year Smiggle was heaven!!)
Laptop accessories (skins, wireless headphones, mouse, case)
All the calligraphy tools in the world!!
Edgier/cooler brands (Fjalraven Veja etc)
Cool electic pins for bag pack
Nice beauty items moisturer, face wash, conditioning clear mascara (she isn’t allowed makeup so this is how she gets round it!)
Fitbit (apparently it’s something she NEEDS to exist)
Many MANY books
Mismatched stud earrings (star and a moon, Saturn and a rocket that kinda thing)
Lush (the whole off!!)

Kikithewitch · 26/11/2018 09:33

Smiggle definitely out here, none of the year 6/7 kids like it here.
DD loves paperchase stuff
Harry Potter
Body shop (but not makeup)
Anything Japanese, she loves anime.
I got her this art set www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B002VDNS76?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title&tag=mumsnetforum-21

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 26/11/2018 09:41

If the 11yo is at secondary do not get her anything from smiggle!! There is a brief window when smiggle stuff is acceptable for girls ages 6-10yo ime.

Following this thread as have a 12yo dd and am struggling for ideas.

So far she has;
A 3d puzzle
A new hoody
Only fools and horses boxset (loves watching sketches on YouTube! )
A soft toy that she asked for
A few books
Some cactus bits (loves cacti!)

bullyingadvice2017 · 26/11/2018 09:51

Not smuggle at 11... so sad apparently for primary kids. So my dd11 and her mates tell me.

Harry Potter.
Slime
Phone accessories

Clothes- new look -primark -
river island (if you can find anything that isn't more suited to pole dancing that is!)

Adidas trainers

ShowOfHands · 26/11/2018 10:00

Do not be led by "you can't go wrong with..." statements because there are at least 2 lists of safe bets on this thread that my dd would not like at all. Somebody bought make-up for her last year for example and she was gracious but upset deep down. See also glitter and sparkles and smiggle. Waste of money.

Dd likes...

Books but from her list of wants. ATM sci fi, fantasy, historical fiction, feminism or Pratchett. A voucher is a really appreciated gift.
Sketch books and charcoal, oil pastels or decent pencils
Artwork, mostly Japanese
Skulls
Gothic jewellery
Obscure texts about language and philosophy
Fruit and herbal teas

BearSoFair · 26/11/2018 10:20

My DD is 11, she seems to have outgrown kids craft sets so we've got her some good markers and brush pens this year. Massive fan of Harry Potter so she has a lot of HP themed gifts this year (jewellery, detailed Hogwarts guide book, backpack and pencil case, funko pop figure), a couple of Pusheen the Cat bits (watch, cushion) and a couple of games (Cheaters Monopoly and Hearing Things). This is the first year she hasn't really had 'toys' on her list!
