What do you consider as essential when decorating for Christmas?
We have just moved house and I have been out and bought all of our decorations and homewares for Christmas but I feel like I am missing something. I want to be special, thank you

A garland with fairy lights for over the fire place.

A Yankee Christmas candle.

Church pillar candles in the fireplace and tea lights. Lots of tealights.

I always have a Christmas tree scented candle. Either Yankee or one of the big Home bargains ones, Fairy lights on the fireplace.

I think you can get away without anything else, as long as you have a tree and a nice table setting for the dinner. But necessarily Christmassy but a ‘special’ one. That was all I did for years. But it was a nice real tree with nice traditional decorations.

Having said that now I have children I go all out, and properly deck the halls for to speak.
Have a Dickensian village scene, a nativity scene, 2 trees (dining room and front room), tables of nibbles and a drinks table set up. Poinsettias in window sills. A wreath.

Garlands, or, as we call them, festive swags with lights on the three downstairs fireplaces. Short swags above six doorways in the hall, wreath on the front door, two trees, long swag and lights on the banisters. Christmassy hat for our suit of armour. Anything else I can think of and have time for.

Should have said I want it to special as it will be my young daughters first real christmas and the first christmas in our new home

Wreath on the front door.
A tree, we always have fake with oodles of decorations.
Candle arch in the window.
Garland around the fireplace.
Standing ornaments, Santa, snowman, reindeer.

And although I no longer have young children, I'm hankering after a Dickensian village scene too Grin

Oh and we have stockings with embroidered names on that get hung every year. They're quite old now but will be used forever, filled for us with only things we actually need now, like soap etc.
