Echo Dot Question

BaconAndAvocado · 16/11/2018 09:13

We have an Alexa in our kitchen which we use a lot.

DCs have said they would like an Echo dot in their bedrooms.

Would they be able to listen to,something different to what is coming out of,the Alexa?

Yes, they don’t link up - you set up a different Alexa account for each device. We have 4 in our house

sjaba · 16/11/2018 09:26

Yes as long as they each have a different account.

BaconAndAvocado · 16/11/2018 09:30

Does that mean you have to pay for more than one subscription?

OP posts:
picklemepopcorn · 16/11/2018 11:15

You can have a guest on each subscription.

We only have one subscription and seem to be able to listen to radio in one room, music in another etc.

BaconAndAvocado · 16/11/2018 14:14

So if both DCs wanted a Dot I would have to get one new subscription?

Subscription to what? I have an Alexa account but afaik pay nothing on top.

RicStar · 16/11/2018 14:24

If you mean amazon music - you will need different plans or a family plan if you want to listen on multiple devices at the same time.

BaconAndAvocado · 16/11/2018 14:31

Yes I meant amazon music .

You will need a family plan to all listen at the same time - otherwise it will cut the first device when you ask to play a song on the second.

Hope a slight hijack is ok Blush

I'm thinking of getting DD2 an Alexa for Christmas, is that the echo is something else? Absolutely we don't have amazon music, just a family Spotify account - would that work on it? I have absolutely no idea how they work Confused

XiCi · 16/11/2018 16:58

Hi hastings. Alexa and Amazon Echo are the same thing. Alexa is just the name you use to ask the Echo questions or give instructions. You don't need amazon music you can just link your Spotify account to the Echo.

susurration · 16/11/2018 17:10

We have two echoes set up, both on the same account. They can play different music to each other. We have the family music plan so we can have different music in each room, plus husband can play his music in the car. It's 14.99 a month.

You could have each one on a different account and pay the echo only music plan, I think that's 3.99 a month. Having them on separate accounts means you can't use them as multi room speakers (link them to play the same music throughout the house) which might be a good thing because then the kids can't annoy each other by setting alarms or silly music etc. I had music playing in one room the other day and my twatty sister changed it to baby shark from the other room.

Thank XiCi I have a feeling I’ll be back with my own thread when I actually get round to buying one Grin

Sunbeam18 · 16/11/2018 18:58

Can you use Deezer on them?

Holidayshopping · 16/11/2018 19:05

Ok-another question, what is the different between an Echo, a Dot and a Spot?!

XiCi · 16/11/2018 20:26

The dot is a smaller version of the echo so does the same things but the speaker is not as good. The spot has a small screen so you can also view news feeds Tec and make video calls with others who have the spot or amazon show

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 16/11/2018 20:56

One account, each device is named - you can edit the names. Mine are named by the room they are in. Each does what it’s asked to, so different things in different rooms all at the same time. But you can also set multi room instructions I think. You can also use as an intercom between rooms or send an announcement to all devices at once.

Sorry to hijack, can I ask a question? I have no experience of these whatsoever but think they sound a great present. Any idea if you can listen to children’s audiobooks on them please? I don’t even have any music account anywhere. I take it I’d have to get one? Thanks.

Standinguptononsense · 16/11/2018 21:24

For those interested they are currently 19.99 on Amazon instead of 49.99!!

Artesia · 16/11/2018 21:25

And another hijack! My son loves listening to music on his echo dot. Want to get him some Bluetooth headphones so he doesn’t disturb dd. Seen lots of people talking about linking them to the dot, but when I asked in John Lewis electrical dept they said it wasn’t possible. I didn’t understand the explanation as to why! Has anyone linked Bluetooth headphones to an echo dot??

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 16/11/2018 21:38

My children listen to audio books on Audible, part of Amazon.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 16/11/2018 21:39

Sorry, I meant that they listen to Audible on their Echo Dots.

LyraBelaqua · 16/11/2018 21:50

Brilliant is there an extra charge for audible? I’m such a novice!

Talisin · 16/11/2018 22:19

Artesia, Bluetooth headphones most certainly do work with the Dot.

Lyra, Yes, you have to pay extra for an Audible subscription although they usually give you a month or two free at the beginning.

LyraBelaqua · 16/11/2018 22:23

Thank you ☺️
