Ideas for 9 year old boy

Some help please for my DS(9.5)

He is so difficult to buy for as he is pretty much happy with anything and never actually asks for or wants anything specific- apart from Lego which he has so much of already. He has Snap Circuits, Scalextric and a Rubik Cube that he plays with a lot.

I have in mind to get him: a new chess set, some bushcraft survival bits, an extension pack for the Scalextric and the Alex Rider set of books.

Anyone have any ideas that have been a hit with their DC to inspire me would be great please.

Is he into any of the Minecraft/roblox/dantdm things. They have annuals/t.shirts/backpacks etc.

Meccano are still going and proved a big hit recently, if he likes building things.

Binoculars

LizzieMacQueen · 23/10/2018 13:04

How about a chess set?

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 23/10/2018 13:05

Minecraft lego

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 23/10/2018 13:05

Knex is good too

Cabawill · 23/10/2018 14:04

Thanks for the suggestions- he is into Minecraft so will have a look into something to do with that. I am getting a new chess set and he had a Lego Boost for Christmas last year which he has played with loads. He does have some Meccano and Technic Lego but wouldn't mind seeing if there is anything new.

Slime is a good call too, thanks.

He had the K'Nex rollercoaster at one point but I think it went to the charity shop as he didn't play with it for ages.

I have similar problems with my 9 year old ds. I was looking at gravitrax last night that looks good. Glad to hear lego boost was a hit, thinking of getting it as a family present .

BertieBotts · 23/10/2018 14:11

Gravitrax is what I was going to suggest.

If he has access to a smartphone/tablet there is a good lego stop motion kit on amazon.

So far my nine year old lad has got football soap, football 3D puzzle, wallet with his name on and a small Lego set -£5 at Argos sale. I will also book pick up some books, goal keeper gloves and chocolate - box of his favourite.
Main present is a big Lego set - arctic helicopter thing.

Hoviscats · 23/10/2018 17:06

i have bought my DS a stop.motion animation camera/software so that he can make films with his millions of lego and playmobil figures! Was a recommendation on another thread and i am hoping he will love it! it was £50 and is the Zu3d camera if you search on amazon.

MegBusset · 23/10/2018 23:30

My 9yo is desperate for a pet - we can't have one for various reasons but I've got a kit where you send off for caterpillars and raise them to butterflies before releasing them.

He is also getting Lego, lots of books, a few craft bits, an animal onesie and possibly some Bluetooth headphones to use with his phone / tablet.

Cabawill · 23/10/2018 23:39

Thanks for these suggestions everyone.

Definitely a few things to have a good look at that I hadn't considered before.

My nephew wants jigsaws for Christmas this year

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 24/10/2018 08:54

My 2 discovered Lego Technics at this age. The oness with the motors in.

AvoidingDM · 25/10/2018 00:16

At 9.5 I'd consider the Lego Mindstorms rather than the Boost esp if hes already into building technic lego.

mrsoutnumbered · 25/10/2018 13:16

@BertieBotts LEGO STOP MOTION!

That sounds brilliant, thank you!!!! My kids would love it and I have been stumped to get something they'll actually want to play with after Boxing Day!!

Tiggles · 25/10/2018 15:12

I picked up Gravitrax starter kit on amazon as it has just dropped to under £35 for my DS. The first time something has arrived from amazon and it is bigger than I expected Grin.

BooEekCackle · 25/10/2018 17:27

Stickbot Zanimation
Raspberry Pi
Sphero or anything else that encourages coding
Lush bathbombs
Hotel Chocolate slab
Go to Tiger and get stocking fillers for him e.g. giant playing cards, gimmick toys, paints and massive canvases, stupid rubbers and a pencil sharpener that is a nose. This is a great shop.
Pencil case
Grow your own venus fly trap (having one growing as we speak. A massive hit). Available from big garden centres.
Backpack

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 25/10/2018 17:54

It's a tough age. I've got a 10 year old.

Echo dot or Bluetooth speaker (if he has a tablet)
Stop-go animation set
Stuff for his room? Themed cushions, framed posters etc.
New games for a console if he has one. If not, a console?
Some new board games
Zombie magic set
Practical joke set (a huge hit here last year)
A robot arm you can build (we got one on Amazon I think)
Skateboard
Joke book
Top trumps cards
Watch
Smiggle stationery (for stocking)
Sharpie pens (v popular here)
Percy Jackson books

My 8yo DS loves his FitBit Ace

QueefLatifah · 26/10/2018 13:07

If he loves his Rubik’s cube look at flipside game! It’s electronic hand held flat light up talking game like that where you have to match up chcangin colours etc
