Cats and Christmas trees. Help!

This will be my first Christmas with my two mischievous lovely cats. Cookie will be 1 year and 1 month old and Miguilim will be 1 year and 2 months, so pretty much in the peak of their messy and destructive phase. I know for sure that they'll make it their purpose in life to attack the Christmas tree and any decoration i dare display.

Cat christmassy people, what do you do in order to make your Christmas tree survives your cats? Am i unreasonable to even want to have my tree and decorate it? Shall i just bow to my feline overlords and let them destroy it as a Chistmas treat?

The picture is of lasts Christmass tree when i only had a dog. A very very veeeery well behaved dog.

I have 2 cats age 1&2 last year my kitten diddnt go near it,i havent had the problem. But my mum did have a cat that climbed up her tree & pulled it over .
Id say talk to your cats if they go near it tell them no ,my cats do understand when i tell them. I have one shy female & one crazy male cat x

Get a little spray bottle and spray them with water if they go near the tree, but expect them to go behind your back and destroy whatever they can get away with all the same. Cats are tree creatures and baubles are irresistible to them.

Maybe get some cheap decorations that you don't care about. Stow your heirloom glass decorations from Great Aunt Mabel for a few years.
