How old is too old for playmobil?

I know it is quite individual really but they often say aged 4-10 on the box.
Ds will be 9 and a half at Christmas and he’s hankering after the playmobil police station. He specially likes the idea of the jail Hmm
He has castles, cowboys, Egyptians, Romans, pirates and some of the sports sets and the sports sets and the castles with the knights still see lots of play, every single day. The others not so much.
I’m not sure really if he’s ‘too old’ to be buying new sets now or if I should just get it and I can always sell it on eBay if he outgrows it in a few months and he can have the money from it.
It’s really the only toy he has now that he plays with apart from board games. He doesn’t like lego and never has.

Too old or ok?

Interesting post. My ds is 7 and is mithering about the ghost busters play mobile. I think he's too old and will be bored by it after an hour - and it's not cheap stuff either is it!

Hoardernomore · 23/09/2018 14:00

Ds really only plays with the figures - which is why I’m a little dubious about a police station. However he really really wants the jail so I guess he might use the station too?

Wow. A seven year old too old for playmobil?

The mind just boggles.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 23/09/2018 16:02

That's really sad that you think 7 is too old for playmobil. Why would you want to discourage imaginative play? !

My dd is 12 and has asked for some more playmobil figures for Christmas, she still loves getting it all out and spent a good few hours this morning playing. I prefer her to be doing that than being on a screen of some sort!

Stillwishihadabs · 23/09/2018 16:08

There is a 12 year gap between db and me. When I was 18/19 (he was 6/7) my mates would play with it after he was in bed Smile

Didthatreallyhappen2 · 23/09/2018 16:15

I'll be 51 this Christmas and love playmobil. I never had it as a child and now my children buy little sets for me which we play with together - and they are teenagers! I know they're just humouring me, but if you love it why have an upper age limit on it.

comeagainforbigfudge · 23/09/2018 16:23

Deffo check out the playmobil royal wedding. I think its in classics its brilliant.

Get the playmobil! But also, as another idea to extend its use, why not think about a stop motion camera? Get him to make his own wee films? Now that would be fun, a raid of the pyramids, following by high jinks across the seas only to themselves in jail before breaking out overinvested

Totally starting a collection of playmobil for my 3yr old 🤣

motortroll · 23/09/2018 16:25

My 11 year old still gets in my 4 year olds room for the playmobil! They're great you'd do if she wanted something specific fit xmas I'd buy it for her tbh!!

Shhhh don't tell her friends though!

trancepants · 23/09/2018 18:28

A friend of mine told me a few months ago that her 10yo had just started to really get into Playmobil and it was a big thing with lots of the child's friends. It was music to my ears. I love to think of older kids actually still being kids. I'm 39 and I can honestly say that I absolutely love toys.

If you want to promote the longevity of these types of toys, a good idea could be to buy a stop motion animation kit, like the HUE kit. That way older kids can make movies with their toys. Which probably seems cooler and "gives them permission" to keep playing.

DiabolicalMess · 24/09/2018 10:41

He's also in to wrestling - I just think he would get bored of it quickly, he may well be 7 but I do know my own child very well. Mind boggles Hmm

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 24/09/2018 12:38

My sister is 20 and still buys old playmobil off of eBay! She lets my Dd play with it but for her it's something she likes and she collects the rare pieces as playmobil becomes quite valuable with age.

ALadyofLetters · 24/09/2018 12:43

My dd1 is 10 soon and still loves playmobil. I still played with my Sindy house at secondary school but loaded books into it when friends came round and pretended I didn’t play with it anymore! I hope dd still loves her playmobil for a few more years.

longestlurkerever · 24/09/2018 12:50

Interesting thread. I loved Playmobil as a child but dd1 has never really played with hers much and it seems much fiddlier than I remember with so many tiny bits that get lost. Maybe I'll see if dd2 likes it better.

yikesanotherbooboo · 24/09/2018 12:55

I love playmobil but my DC never got involved. DD however was getting sylvanians and fiddling about with their clothes and houses in her teens. Her friends loved playing with them when they came over; likewise dolls house and dressing up clothes.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 24/09/2018 12:55

I love getting my nativity playmobile sets out every year.

I'm 48 in December. Grin

MinecraftHolmes · 24/09/2018 14:37

I still love playmobil and I'm 29 Grin. My sister and I were still actively playing with it when we were 11/12. The we'd just occasionally set it up and put it away again. The DC play with those sets at my mum's house now.

I'm not sure what toys would be appropriate for a child of 7 who is "too old" for something like Playmobil.

ChanklyBore · 24/09/2018 16:25

Get bored of it - fine, yes I agree you know your own child, whatever. You thinking 7 is too old for playmobil, mind still boggles.

SoMuchToBits · 24/09/2018 21:46

You're never too old for Playmobil! Thank you MrsMoasty for mentioning the Playmo Royal wedding thread. I had such fun setting all that up, and I'm 56! Having said that, my ds loved Playmobil for years, but isn't really interested any longer. But he played with it until he was 15! I really don't think there's a set upper age limit, it depends on the child (or adult).

Misty9 · 24/09/2018 23:49

Is it the take along police station? We've got it and ds enjoys it. If it's the massive police station then I decided against that one for the same reason that ds only really plays with the people. He was a bit disappointed though...

WellTidy · 24/09/2018 23:54

Long live childhood, I say.

JurassicGirl · 24/09/2018 23:55

My dd9, 10 at Christmas has asked for the playmobil takealong dolls house. She loves small dolls & figures & is really hoping to get it (she is!)
