DS (6) wants a telescope. Any recommendations?

I can't really help but can share my findings. My DD wants one for her 7th birthday next month and I've been on the look out. I've been looking at children's one and noticed 2 things. 1) the chilrens ones seem to be made to sit on desks which wouldn't work in her room and 2) the children's ones seem to have very mixed reviews about the same type, some saying they're excellent and others saying they're rubbish. So far I'm holding off on buying anything because I'm at a loss!

I've looked at a few. I was looking at one by the Discovery Channel and on one website (possibly argos) the reviews were good and on Amazon they weren't so good. So I have given up again for now!

You need to spend a lot of money to get a decent telescope, maybe a good pair of binoculars would be better?

I was wondering this. The thing is, it would only a basic one in our case. I know that all she wants it for is to see stars a bit closer and she does already have a pair of binoculars.

I'm patently aware though that any telescope could spark a real interest and then she might want a better one. We have a budget for it of about £30 so I'm left wondering whether to a) get a cheap one rather than nothing or b) not get a telescope at all and get something else instead.

We got one for my Dd7 last Christmas from the RSPB website. It's not too complicated and sits on her desk nicely.

havibg bought a half decent one that no one has worked out how to use I’d say buy a cheap one that isn’t complicated.
