Ds has asked for a go pro for Christmas, so I typed it into amazon. Anyone an expert on theses? It looks unbelievably complicated, there are so many cameras and different accessories! Which do I get? And what accessories to go with it!

The only thing I know for sure is that he'd want the option of using it under water.

How old is he?

Japril · 14/08/2018 18:20

Watching with interest as we want one too.

He's 10, so I don't want to go mad price wise. But he does take really good care of his things. He does a lot of swimming, and we go walking, plus he does lots of runs and adventure activities.

Dh is a GoPro freak, we have a Hero4, Hero5 and Session (and the bloody drone that goes with it 🙄). The Session is perfectly good if you don’t need a screen. We don’t have the Hero with no numbers after it, I guess that’s the entry level one but I’m certain it would do the job. All the GoPros we’ve had take great pictures/ videos.

I’d recommend buying proper GoPro mounts rather than cheapo Amazon/ EBay ones as they break easily, which can cause damage to the GoPro.

PS DS(9) has ‘inherited’ the Hero4 and thinks it’s the coolest thing ever!

AriNi31 · 14/08/2018 21:28

Watching too!

We bought one for our daughter two Christmases ago and she absolutely loves it. She's 10 now, currently on holiday with her grandparents, and has been emailing photos and videos. The Hero 4 is very robust and user friendly IME.

Wow, they are pricey! How much should I expect to spend on the suggested ones.

The newest and highest spec are, as a company it’s a lot like Apple. You’re paying for the brand...

Why not look for a second hand Hero4 on EBay? As they’re so sturdy, they don’t get scratched or damaged much.

Oh god, I'm looking on eBay. I've never been so confused in my life. What are the absolute must haves if I get a hero 5?

You’ll need a decent size SD card and a way of mounting it to his body: head strap, chest strap or both. Ds and dh use theirs on motorbikes/ push bikes so use helmet mounts or handle bar mounts but if he doesn’t want to do that then you don’t need them. A new one will come with helmet mounts but they may have been used if you buy a second hand one as they stick on to the helmet.

lunar1 · 15/08/2018 16:34

Do they have a screen to view while you record?

The hero5 does, the Hero5 Session doesn’t... the Session is also tiiiiny so more likely to get lost (I always worry when carrying it around) but it is a lot cheaper.

I have manager to get a go pro hero 5 and accessories from eBay for a really good price. It's all in working order, there just isn't any instructions. I'll have to download some.

What so do I need to download onto DS's phone on Christmas Eve to go with it?
