Hi I wanted to ask if anyone bought the switch for Christmas and if it went down well. I'm not sure if I should just buy a Samsung tablet as it would be mainly for when out and about. I'm just trying to work out what to do. I know I have lots of time to decide but want to get organised. My Ds is 7. Thanks

There's such a huge difference between the Switch and a tablet, it depends on what the child is into.

The Switch is great for child friendly games e.g. Mario, Pokémon, Zelda.

A tablet will be good for apps and the internet, but not gaming.

I don't let mine take the Switch out of the house unless it's to travel to grandparents or something, it's too expensive.

Thanks for reply. He has a Nintendo Dsand loves playing it his cousin as an ipad mini any time he's up my Ds stops playing it and watches him playing minecraft and watching utube So wanted to get something he can play when up at grandparents house.

Go with the Switch. Our daughter (10) has one and loves it. We had a Samsung tablet & it was never used. She does use my iPad as well occasionally but for a child I would go with the Switch, otherwise you will end up with a child who just sits there watching YouTube videos of other children having fun, very strange IMO!

Does he have the newest type of ds that plays the 3ds games? (2ds or 3ds) if not I would say to upgrade to that over the switch for a 7 year old, they are still releasing games for it and will be for a good few years and it plays all the old ds games. My dd (9) got hers when she was 6 and its still used loads. DH has a switch and the girls do play with him but the size is quite awkward for my youngest dd (6) when in handheld whereas the 2ds is a perfect size in her hands. And personally when it's on the tv in 2 player mode I don't find the control very easy to use, much prefer the ps4. 😂

If he would like to watch videos or play Minecraft you would be better buying the tablet. As far as im aware the switch doesnt have minecraft. Mine have kindle fire tablets as I liked the parent controls and they were only £50 (Or £35 on black Friday) just needed to buy a sd card which was about £6.

The switch doesn't have a very wide range of children's games at the moment and they are all still quite expensive even second hand whereas the tablet he can have lots of free or cheap apps. I know my dds prefer to switch between games than just have the one to play.

Price wise you could buy the switch and one game or a tablet, case, apps, a few new ds games and have money to spare.

The switch was a big hit with our 7yr old. He much prefers playing that now than the iPad. I was unsure at first if it would be worth it but it really is. He plays it as a hand held more than he does connected to the tv and it's great for taking away with us.

Thank you everyone who took time to reply and for the great advice. I decided to go with something else I ended up buying a ps vita 2000 and got 4 games one been minecraft. I think he will love it fingers crossed. That's my Ds done for Christmas also bought him a cover and case to go with it along with a few other bits for him to open. My Dh thinks I'm mad but feel better now I have him done. Good luck with the Christmas shopping 🎅🎅

My son is 14 and got a Switch for his last birthday and of the consoles we have had this has been the most used. We bought mario kart for it so we could all join in, and towards this Xmas I have just ordered a switch transporter case to keep games and controllers safe if he goes for a sleepover.
