When to give the Christmas Eve box

First year of doing Christmas Eve box, should I leave them out overnight for the morning or stealthily plant them in the living room at some point before evening.
I'd rather doing it in the evening as they contain pj's, book and cuddly toy but I worry that's just unnecessary stress during the day and it's so much easier to put them out now for the morning.
Help!!

Evening here. For me part of the idea of the box is to send the children to bed.

We always go out for an activity on christmas eve, the box is discovered by the kids on their return (I often need to pop to the loo while the kids are getting I the car to go out, mysteriously).

Mine are being left tonight for them in the morning by the elves . We have family over tomorrow so easier to do it before .

Ha Stompy that is exactly our plan! We are going to an activity in the morning so once kids are in the car DH will nip back for his "gloves and put the box in the room for DD(4) and then we can say the elves left it while we were out.
