We're hosting the PILs for part of Christmas day (between breakfast and lunch, they stop-off en route to SIL's house).

We usually feed them a glass of Champage or mulled wine and some canapés.

Previously we've made:

  1. Stilton stuffed medjool dates
  2. Devilled eggs
  3. Crudités and yogurty dip
  4. Mushroom vol au vents
  5. Smoked salmon blinis
  6. PArma ham wrapped around wedges of pear
  7. Other things that I forget

What's your favourite canapé?

Devils on horseback (done for the first time last Christmas and regularly since!).
I'm doing Devils and mini pigs in blankets as canapés this year: and buying shares in bacon!

Ha on the shares in bacon, we have three packs so far in our online Christmas online shop... I can feel a fourth coming on.

Mini pigs also a good call!

Miracle for angels on horseback, do you buy the tinned smoked oysters, wrap them in bacon and grill them?

I don't think I've seen those crostini shells... I'll see if Waitrose has any, they'd be good with prawns, dill and cured salmon.

I bloody love a canapé!

Sheet of puff pastry - use festive cookie cutters, spread layer of cranberry sauce, sprinkle some cooked smoked bacon, top with cubes of brie. Cook until puffy and melty. Eat. Drool.

Peppadew peppers stuffed with soft goats cheese and chives.
Puff pastry squares baked with goats chesse (the rinded type)
Crostini shells with soft cheese (not goats) and smoked salmon

One year DP went overboard on the canapes, but thrones I remember ere a mix of cream cheese and tuna rolled into balls and coated in chopped parsley

formerbabe · 12/12/2017 16:37

Mini Yorkshire puddings filled with horseradish and a small piece of sliced beef.

Small lettuce cups...fill with a king prawn and some Marie rose sauce.

DancingOnParsnips · 12/12/2017 22:04

Yum. Marking place.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 12/12/2017 22:16

This time of year I love a Brie and cranberry filo parcel. Or a tiny square of rye bread with a minute piece of smoked salmon and a drop of horseradish. Yum! I love canapés

MiltonTheCockroach · 12/12/2017 23:23

All things that have already been mentioned plus cooker grease, dropped crumbs and my own faeces.

Us roaches aren't too difficult to cater for if I'm honest.

(no Iceland crap though)

EnglishGirlApproximately · 12/12/2017 23:27

Fig and goats cheese wrapped in Parma ham
Smokes salmon and Creme Fraiche blinis
Honey and soy glazed mini chipolatas
I do like a vol au vent as well

SkeletalFishtail · 12/12/2017 23:30

Brie and cranberry in a triangle of filo pastry

AnonEvent · 13/12/2017 10:42

Thanks all, here's the canape plan:

  1. Devilled eggs, because I like them
  2. Parma ham wrapped around pears
  3. Brie and cranberry filo parcels
  4. Crostini shells with smoked salmon mousse
  5. Stilton stuffed medjool dates
  6. Glazed chipolatas
  7. Mushroom vol au vents (because the '80's food is OK)

We'll do a mix of the above for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

I've also bought a couple of packs of Waitrose sausage rolls.

Milton I'll see if I can find a use for some cooker grease, I had my oven cleaned (by an external vendor for the first time ever) the other day, I swear I could have re-constituted a whole duck from the scrapings.

  1. Some mini pavlovas might be nice - to have a pudding canape
WellTidy · 13/12/2017 10:58

Dates - replace the stone with an almond and a bit of brie. Wrap the whole thing in half a rasher of unsmoked bacon and secure it with a cocktail stick. Bake. They're beautiful.

Ariadne waaaaaaah.... sweet canapés? That changes everything!
