Board game for adults Carcassonne Labyrinth or something else

I want to get a board game for a 60+ couple.

I had Carcassonne in mind but it costs a bit more than I can afford.

I have never played it but love the look of it and they love all things French. However not sure if it's too complicated. Risk, eg, would not be their thing.

Thought of Othello. Safe choice but would have liked something they haven't come across.

Labyrinth looks really good and price is great. Is it too childlike?

Are you looking purely for a 2 player game? Patchwork is a good one (and the theme is quite quirky).

Carcassonne isn’t that complicated (at least the basic game isn’t - if you add in some of the expansions that are available it gets much more complex), and works well enough with 2, though it’s really best with 3 or 4 people. It’s often seen as a ‘gateway’ game, i.e. a gentle introduction to the modern style of board games. Ticket To Ride is another good game in this sort of category (and has a travel theme).

We love Labyrinth as a family game but DH & I wouldn't play it if it was just the two of us.

How about card games? Can canasta be 2 player?

If it is just for the two of them, Duke is fantastic. Or Hive if they haven't seen it before?

If it's to play with others then Code Names is wonderful.

Settlers of Catan

There's a game called Journey through Britain that is relatively simple to learn but combines general knowledge and gentle strategy. My parents love it.

Also rummikub is excellent.

It is mainly just for the two of them.

Putting in a vote for Pandemic. It's a co-op game and works well with 2 (or 3 or 4). Relatively easy to learn and there are expansions and different variants if they enjoy it!

Pandemic. If it’s just two of you it’s perfect. DH and I often play. Very easy learn. No arguments either as it’s a cooperative game.

You need three for catan!
(Though there is a two player adaptation I think, with cards?)
Dixit also cannot work with two!

Machi Koro is good (hence name!)
Ticket to Ride works well with two.
Lost Cities card game by Reiner Kniezier is a good two player game.
As is Star Realms.

DH says carcassone has very good reviews and has observed it being played plenty or times, another one is code game duette.

I suspect there will be much game playing in my future...

Odin's ravens is a 2 player game and DH plays it against our young teens and they often beat him

I had no idea how many fantastic games there were.

Not strictly a board game but bananagram is like a fast paced version of scramble. Two people can play and it's great fun.

The banana game sounds good and the price is great. The presentation has rather less gravitas than what I was aiming for

I like Ticket to Ride but I play a computer version as we aren't much of a board game family.

Love labyrinth, but it's best played with 3 or more I think. With two players you are taking turns immediately after each other which isn't ideal.

Having said that we've enjoyed it when I've played with just DS (10), so as a stand in game with kids I'd say 2 is ok. For a great game with adults, I think you need 3 or more.

We love Ticket to Ride as a 2 player, but also Jaipur and Lost Cities are really good. We also enjoyed Patchwork.
