Tesco delivery and tukey

This year for the 1st time ever I have booked a Christmas food delivery with Tesco. We usually get our turkey from a butcher who's son used to work with dh but he has now left so I've been looking at other turkey options.

Would I be a total idiot to order one from Tesco to be delivered on xmas eve? What are the chances it won't come and I'll be left turkeyless?

Am I better off just ordering with a local butcher instead?

I wouldn't mind but I don;t even really like turkey! Grin

I'm not sure I'd trust the important things to be delivered on Christmas Eve (Although never tried) but knowing what the replacements can be like at the best of times, I don't think I'd risk it. Can you change your delivery to 23rd then if it doesn't arrive you can at least try to get one.

Loads of Tesco stores won't even deliver on Christmas Eve.

Add in the fact that it's a Sunday, and deliveries the night before will be smaller than usual, and I certainly wouldn't rely on them to deliver a turkey.

Twillow · 28/11/2017 17:31

There's no chance you won't get one - the pickers have them reserved. Tesco had heaps of reduced turkeys last christmas eve (that's what I'm getting this year...!)

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 28/11/2017 17:32

When I used to have Christmas deliveries the turkey you pre-ordered was 'locked in' to the order and couldn't be changed - so it was guaranteed to be delivered. Unfortunately they had no such notions with the rest of the order!

HoneyDragon · 28/11/2017 17:46

I thought Tesco were only delivering to the 23rd?

After being let down by both our local butcher a couple of times and Waitrose I took a punt on a Jimmys farm free range Turkey from Costco. They are always delivered the last working day before Christmas and fantastic quality and value for money.

I have had a couple of disastrous Tesco Xmas deliveries. Not bothering year and going shopping instead. Turkey is ordered from the butcher, no way would I risk it on Xmas eve. I'm sure most of them are fine but you can bet I'd be the one whose turkey went missing or fell off the van and rolled away.

2 year ago I booked a Tesco delivery for my Christmas shop to be delivered on Christmas Eve with lots of goodies specially chosen in early December after spending ages on their website. Was feeling very smug until delivery man showed up with a very long list of things that were out of stock and no substitutes. No matter how early you put in the order it is just picked on the day.

pinkblink · 28/11/2017 17:53

Iv ordered mine to collect in store Christmas Eve as delivery is only until the 23rd I'm sure, I have faith but I'm biased as I work for them 🙈

Vitalogy · 28/11/2017 17:53

Probably a silly question, is it a fresh one or frozen?

user9217 · 28/11/2017 18:10

I do tesco delivery midweek saver (as many deliveries Tuesday - Thursday as you like in a month for £3.50 a month. I ordered our turkey and it was delivered today and it sat in the freezer. Best early imo Just in case but good luck and I hope you manage to find one!

Phosphorus · 28/11/2017 18:56

Tesco definitely don't put aside/reserve turkeys.

You get whatever the dot com shoppers find on the shelves on the day.

And a Sunday which is also Christmas Eve is risky.

I have a frozen one hiding in my freezer as we speak. Always tastes great. Xmas Grin

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 28/11/2017 20:25

Mine was always reserved, unchangeable and came with my name on it.

HotelEuphoria · 28/11/2017 20:44

Like the pp said you will have no problem getting a turkey on Christmas Eve and they are reduced. DS used to work there and would nip to the loo to call me as soon as he heard they were being marked down. Did it for two years until I realised I don't actually like turkey that much.

pinkblink · 28/11/2017 20:58

Tesco do order in turkeys for people individually, they then get kept back for the customer and not put out on the shop floor, it's the festive food ordering system

Notyetthere · 29/11/2017 03:45

Yes as pp said, on your Tesco online order, if you put a turkey in your basket, they lock in that order after a certain date so that you can't change it, or remove it from the order. They then put that particular turkey aside for your delivery.

CakesRUs · 29/11/2017 04:32

We've used Tesco delivery for years. I've had bad chicken, and once a turkey that I picked up instore, which were definitely off, you can't deny the smell of off poultry. So I'd check it before Xmas morning if I were you.

MrsJoyless · 29/11/2017 05:47

A few years ago our 23rd December delivery came minus the frozen turkey. The Tesco delivery driver returned at the end of his shift bringing us a fresh one and a £5 voucher. I think, therefore, that they will go out of their way to fulfil your order.
