Any ideas for Xmas starter which doesn't take too much effort? Something that's not soup or fish

We do little bruschetta (small white baguette cut into thin slices, smothered in garlic and olive oil and cooked in the oven until brown and crispy) topped with goats cheese roasted peppers (we also do one with smoked salmon but I realise you said no fish). Could also use fresh tomato, mozzarella or anything else that takes your fancy. The bruschetta keep for a few weeks in a tin so easily made in advance, then just add the toppings in the morning.

I like duck rilette with a slice of seeded brown bread and a small rocket salad.

Big plates of cured meats, cheeses, olives and antipasti (Lidl/Aldi) and ciabatta crostini made as JollyGiraffe suggests. People add their own toppings. Serve with prosecco

Antipasti on a big platter.

We tend to have, erm, chocolate as a several-hour-long starter on Christmas Day.

AppleKatie · 26/11/2017 10:28

I'm not sure I want or need a starter on Christmas Day.

But if pushed I'd either go full 1980s and serve Melon.

Or bizarrely Italian with tomato and mozzarella salad as I like it and don't care much that it doesn't 'go' 😂

I have ordered these from morrisons
Brie and Cranberry tartlets
Duck straws (i know not christmasy but the family love them)
Just going to ask everyone which they want and throw into the oven going to serve 3 per portion with some rocket and Cranberry sauce.

My starter would be Camenbert- either egged and breadrumbed , deep fried and served with mango chutney (I tried it with cranberry but not as nice IMO) , tomato and rocket

or

baked with dippy bread but that's more buffet / Christmas Eve .

or
filo pastry, baked into star shapes (overlapped squares in a bun tin) then feta, olives, tomato (sundried or fresh)

We don't do starters here though.

Thanks for the suggestions. Think I'm going with antipasti cured meats and a baked Camembert with crusty bread for dipping.

To the person who suggested the Brie and cranberry tarts - I'm actually making something very similar for Xmas eve! They look yummy
