Secret Santa question: If you say "no smellies"...

chicaguapa · 25/11/2017 11:16

Does "no smellies" mean no toiletries, body lotion, bubble bath etc. or does it mean nothing that smells? I'd like to get the L'Occitane charity candle but DH thinks that comes under "smellies".

What do you think?

dementedpixie · 25/11/2017 11:17

I would regard it as toiletries

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 25/11/2017 11:17

Smellies to me mean toiletries? Bubble bath, shower gel and the like

RoganJosh · 25/11/2017 11:18

I agree that it’s toiletries.

IceMagic · 25/11/2017 11:18

I think of it as meaning toiletries.

AuntieStella · 25/11/2017 11:19

I think you're right. But the existence of your DH's view means that you shouldn't give anything where the whole purpose is the smell. Because unless you know the recipient actually means 'no toiletries' then all scent had to be out.

NeverUseThisName · 25/11/2017 11:20

I would take it as anything that has smell added to it ie including candles but not including a sachet of mulled wine spices, say.

FitBitFanClub · 25/11/2017 11:21

I would interpret "no smellies" as meaning, no dull, unimaginative "that'll do" gifts.

NeverUseThisName · 25/11/2017 11:21

But then I'm coming from the perspective of someone who's allergic to things. Any fragrant gift is wasted on me Sad

WhatHaveIFound · 25/11/2017 11:22

Smellies mean toiletries to me. A candle would be ok. Useful for people like me who are allergic to lots of things on their skin. I hate to see Secret Santa gifts going to waste.

Dozer · 25/11/2017 11:22

Scented candles are in the same bracket IMO and unpopular gifts to receive, eg see the teachers' gifts threads!

LizzieMacQueen · 25/11/2017 11:26

To me it means no Bayliss and Harding sets. They go straight to charity

SandLand · 25/11/2017 11:33

I'd dislike both as a present. But if I wrote "no smellies" I would be meaning bath stuff and lotions.

ParadiseCity · 25/11/2017 11:35

I'd love one of those candles so I'm biased and would say buy It!! To me smellies means toiletries.

LaBelleSausage · 25/11/2017 11:43

I'd play it safe and avoid the candle

IHeartDodo · 25/11/2017 11:53

I hate all those fragrances in bubble bath and candles, so yes I would class a strongly-perfumed candle as "smellies".

Notso · 25/11/2017 11:55

I'd say no smellies means no toiletries. However I wouldn't buy someone anything fragranced without knowing they liked the fragrance, perfume my Mum loves gives me an instant migraine. Smells are just to personal to choose for others.
