I’m looking for ideas for a sharing starter for Christmas day...ideally something I can have prepared the night before and just present! There will be 14 of us altogether and no dietary requirements.

You could do canapes, with salad- lots of lovely ones around
A fish platter, smoked and hot smoked salmon, makerel, trout, prawns, crab, fish pates, etc. with warm brown rolls
Antipasti plate - cold meats, salamis, marinated vegetables, olives, sundried tomatoes, cubes of cheese, breadsticks, crackers, or warm rolls again,
Fish mousses with melba toast
A quiche/ tart - smoked salmon, watercress with ricotta
or (a bit heavy maybe) baked cambert and french bread

I meant to say you can get part baked brown rolls in Aldi (very cheap) which can just be popped in the oven for about 10 minutes
With the fish mousses you could buy or make a selction or have different meat and fish pates with salad
Lots of the canapes are ones you don't have to cook

I have other tart suggestions if you wanted to go that route Smile

I'd go all fish, smoked mackerel and salmon, gravadlax, a pate of some sort and big juicy prawns with brown bread/rolls and butter.

I'd serve it on some mixed leaves that people can take if they want, but other than that, not bother with veg as generally loads on the main, same with no meat as loads of Turkey, no cheese as I do a cheese course.

Are you after a self-serve salad, a 'pick at it' style tear and share, a dip style starter or something like a tart that you can divvy up?

Good Housekeeping smoked salmon & mackerel mousse - I made this a few years ago for a Christmas starter and it looked amazing on the table and was really tasty:-
