We will have 16 adults, 2 children (+ 1 baby) for Xmas dinner, roughly how much turkey will we need (by weight)?

We won't have stuffing, just potatoes and veg with it.

Unsure if this is true, but I found this:

www.norbest.com/articles/turkey-calculator

According to the website it says you'll need: 17 lbs or 7.7 kg.

Also, which ever size you buy make sure it will fit in your oven!

I would buy a medium sized turkey and a couple of turkey breasts which i would cook in lots of butter, wine and herbs in a " tin foil tent" to try and keep moist.
I would allow 200g per person, cooked weight. So about 250g uncooked of breast. The whole bird requires more pp to account for bones.
But if you buy a single HUGH turkey be prepared for half of it to be very very dry because no matter how much brining/ buttering you a lot of the breasts will be dry before the bird is thoroughly cooked.
Much easier to cook smaller birds than a huge one.
Also- have you thought that not everybody loves turkey?
Why not cook a large gammon or a lovely piece of pork with crackling ?

If I was cooking Christmas dinner for that many I would do a couple of large turkey breasts( much easier to carve too) , a full shoulder of pork and a fab, glazed gammon. Or a massive rib of beef!
Whatever you do- prepare as MUCH as possible on Christmas Eve.
And enjoy yourself!
Oh, and always get more pigs in blankets than you think you will need!!!
