Can anyone advise?! After a lot of consideration I've decided to get DS a phone for Christmas. It'll be his first phone, hes been wanting one for ages and I've always said no. Anyway, what would you go for? I don't want anything brand new so it will be refurbished and paid for outright and I'll get the sim separately... I'd quite like it to have a box though. I have an android myself so wondered about a Samsung but then are iPhones cooler?! And would it need to be a 6s or newer in order to support the latest apps and stuff. Have googled and googled and feel like I'm going round in circles. There are some on eBay... is it better to avoid them? Can anyone recommend anything?

iPhones are definitely cooler. I would never buy a phone that wasn't an iPhone.

I don't think for his first phone, he needs the newest model. I don't know whether the older iPhones will support the new apps- but once you've found this out, I would get whatever iPhone does this- secondhand or not.

What about an older iPhone like a 4S or 5 something. Some secondhand places give a warranty on used phones as well. I've generally found iPhones to be well made and last me a good while.

We got dd one on Tesco Mobile.
It was capped so she couldn’t go over unless she topped it up.
It was fully charged, wrapped and ready to go on Xmas morning

My kids have iPhones. Easy to track. I can use the find iPhone app or find my friends to see where the kids are at any given time.

Also very handy if the phone goes missing or their friends call round and don't know where they are. I just look my kids up and say, "They're at Bob's house" or "They're at the park"

A Moto G. Various specs available. Good phones and great value.

Oh thanks so much for the advice. I'll look at Tesco mobile then too - and I'll go with an iPhone I think. He'll be so excited I can't wait!

I wouldn't go for an older iPhone - I am still on iPhone 5 and slowly apps are not compatible as I can no longer upgrade to the latest iOS, my phone has reached its personal limit - I definitely wouldn't go for a 4.

Get him an iPhone 5s/SE or 6 - these can be got handy from pre-owned places like a cex shop with the bonus of warranty. iPhone is cheaper and easier to replace a screen than a Samsung I have found
