Basic drone for 9yo DS?

My 9yo DS would really love a drone for Christmas, but I'm reluctant to spend much as knowing him, he'll love it on Christmas day and then the novelty will wear off. Can anyone recommend a decent but reasonably priced (no more than £50 really) basic drone? I've seen ads for the Air Hogs Hyper Drift Drone...does anyone have it? Is it any good?

Before you purchase a few of things to consider:
Do you live near somewhere he can fly it?
Will you get insurance?
Will one of you supervise?

Agree that you should look at the rules around where and how you can legally fly a drone first, I wouldn't be happy about a nine year old being responsible for sticking to the law unless supervised.

As the wife of a radio controlled plane enthusiast of many years standing, some drone flyers can be a right pain. They turn up and fly anywhere without due regard for public safety. At some point soon a plane will be brought down by one (a number of near misses already reported). No etiquette (eg telling other flyers they are about to launch, standing in appropriate places, checking frequencies) as they haven't had to learn to fly via a club. No public liability insurance.

OP - why not buy an indoor model? Smaller, cheaper, and less dangerous.

I'm talking about getting something small and basic and wouldn't rule out an indoor one - hence asking about the Air Hogs Hyper Drift Drone. He's 9...I had imagined getting something that he can move up and down and from side to side. It doesn't need to go really high...certainly not high enough to be a risk to aeroplanes. I might be being very ignorant, but why is it treated so very differently to a RC helicopter?

Drones are very easy to fly compared with traditional helicopters and planes. People tended to join clubs to learn how to fly planes and helicopters, and were taught the rules and how to fly by more experienced members.

These days anyone can buy a drone, unpack it and fly, which is why there is more of an issue.
