Christmas tree decorations

After years and years of random mismatched decorations, we bought a lovely 7ft Christmas tree in the John Lewis sale in Jan.

I need to buy tinsel and baubles, but where from? I need a lot, and I want them to look uniform and lovely. I also need good, thick tinsel which is quite hard to find these days.

I always find local garden centres to be best but hunt around as some will have offers on

i tend to mix cheap with a few better ones, otherwise it will cost a fortune! Wilkos are really good-I'd get a big tub of plainer baubles and then mix with some fancier ones. I'd say garden centres is a good shout. Dobbies usually have really nice ones.
I don't do tinsel but I did get some nice ribbon last year...couldn't get it to sit right so took it off...might try again this year!

I would use wired ribbon instead of tinsel. The trick is to twist it every two feet or so.

When I had a complete tree overhaul I got a lot from www.christmastimeuk.com
They keep sending me discount codes so there's currently 15% off til the 18th with EBD17. I mostly used them for the basic baubles and picked up the more special ones from garden centres and TK Maxx along the way.

My favorite tree is a real Noble Fir with a gorgeous Silver Star at the top and white lights.

Just plain and simple.

Nothing for the dogs to eat.

Nothing for kids to break.

A very simple classic look. I realize that some people want something fancier, but for me, this is working fabulously :)

Also go for larger baubles. I couldn't figure out why my tree didn't look right last year and it was mainly that although I had lots on the tree a lot of the decorations just weren't big enough. I bought some bigger baubles in white and silver I think and it made a huge difference.

I don't do tinsel so can't help there!

I think that random mismatched decorations look much better than uniform ones, so I'm probably not much help.

I only buy them in certain colours, that way they always go with one another, even though they've been bought at different times. I find if you splash out, and buy everything in a "theme" at JL, say, it just looks overdone. I like JL, Cox and Cox, white company etc. Accessorize often have nice children's baubles too.

Yes I stick to a colour theme too. I'm a bit fussy about my tree! Love Cox & Cox decorations. And sometimes buy something from JL. Home Sense and TK Maxx are good too.

Although I think if I buy any more DH might leave me! Mind you - every cloud and all that!

I like random decorations too, and the more rustic looking the better. Many of mine were made by my DCs over the years, augmented by baubles and little Swedish straw ornaments and other treasures.

I do love mismatched decorations too, we've amassed some lovely keepsakes over the years but I'd like a good foundation of nice decorations, with the mismatched ones dotted around.

I like random multicoloured decorations (and always multicoloured lights, never white) but we have a rule that everything must hang from branches, no garlands of any description and definitely no tinsel. Large garden centres are the best bet IMO.

The supermarkets seem to be best for really thick, fluffy tinsel.

I don't use it these days, but I did find myself stopping to have a feel of the lovely tinsel last year at Tesco's .

I would spend a bit on quite a few fairly big but inexpensive base baubles in whatever couple of colours you love best, and then find some more special ones to supplement the scheme with.

I'm quite picky so I often have to search around, but I always go to JL, M&S, Next, just to see if there is anything nice. M&S are doing 3 for 2 on a lot of their stuff at the moment. But it really does depend on what you like. eBay is also good.

So I have started buying fanicer decorations and have a good few nice ones now.

I actually bought cheaper type in Home Bargains that were nicer than some pricier ones.

We started with cheaper baubles - from pound stretchers etc, and every year it's a family tradition to buy a few more special/ expensive decorations, now we have more 'special' mismatched decorations than cheap ones and I love the tree. Plus every decoration is a memory of where we were, that day out etc or who chose it.

I have lots of decorations that have memories attached too. We have lived in four different countries over the years and I have things bought in various places as well as on holiday etc.

I try and buy a new decoration a year, whether it's something that reminds us of s trip, something the kids have taken a shine to etc but you end up with so many!.

What colour scheme do you have? We had purple and silver on a black tree (!!) Which was very fashionable when we first got it. The new tree is realistic looking with hinged branches rather than the ones that need bending into shape. I'm thinking of traditional gold and red?

Bright multicoloured here, the only colour I actively avoid is pink as I just don't think it looks right. If I had to do a colour scheme it probably would be gold and red, but I really don't like white lights so multicoloured suits us best.
