Pre-Christmas night away - where should we go??

Last year we went to Berlin for a few nights before Christmas and it was absolutely magical. This year the DC don't break up from school until the 22nd December or so (and our budget is lower) so we're planning a 1-2 night weekend UK break in mid-December instead.

I'd love your suggestions on where we could go. We want somewhere that will have that Christmassy feel - lights, ice rink, maybe a Christmas market, maybe a show, nice places to have a hot chocolate, etc etc. Where would you recommend?

Edinburgh, Bath or York.

Bath and Winchester are beautiful at Christmas. Both have fab markets. Winchester also has an ice rink at the Cathedral- absolutely magical.

Oooh, thank you. Bath and Winchester both look like good options Smile

Edinburgh is just fabulous at Christmas, with a lot to do for both adults and children. This year, as I'll be heavily pregnant then, my hubby and me are visiting Harrogate in late November to see their Christmas market for the first time. I could imagine both Bath and Winchester being stunning at that time of year too - that's a little too far to travel for me for one night thought. We live in Northumberland x

You'd have to research the local area.. but Combe Abbey (hotel) is beautiful at Christmas.. they have amazing decorations and special Christmas events like Carol singing etc which would be good fun.

Let us know where you decide!

We're going to Edinburgh I can't wait!

I love Winchester, not been at Christmas.

Word of warning about Bath. My sister lives there and says it's absolutely horrendous at Christmas, pretty sure it was deemed unsafe last year due to how busy it was.

It's annoying we break up so late this year as doesn't give much chance to do anything before Christmas!

York is beautiful at Christmas - we luckily live quite close so DH and I tend to go over for the day, wander, go somewhere lovely for lunch, pick up a couple of gifts etc - it's just a really lovely atmosphere!

Hever Castle is lovely but you need to book early.

I second Winchester. The Wessex Hotel overlooks the cathedral where the market and ice rink are. There's also a (an?) Hotel du Vin very close by.
