Recording stories

Once upon a time, long, long ago, I used to tell my children stories while recording them on their Fisher Price tape recorder(s). They loved it, right up to secondary school (and - if truth be told - into early teens). Nothing better if you've got a rotten cold or measles than lying in bed listening on your very own tape recorder to your Dad reading 'Lord of the Rings' on a beach in Portugal last summer or the 'Hobbit' in the back garden last month. I'd love to do the same (and love them to do the same) now that they are grown up and having (grand)children. But audio tape is hard to find even if a Fisher Price tape recorder is available anywhere but on e-Bay. I've tried to find an equally simple but more modern alternative but come up with absolutely nothing. If anyone on Mumsnet has any ideas, i'd love to hear them. Thank you in advance!
