The cake's made, ready to marzipan.

Apart from buying ready rolled fondant icing is there another easy way?

last year I used the microwave-melted marshmallow and icing sugar idea (nicked from Nadiya on GBBO)

It's messy, but it worked.

lots cheaper too - google marshmallow fondant icing or similar and you should get some recipes.

Icing sugar and egg whites. Mix to hard peaks and slap on cake will look like snow peaks
Alternative is put in piping bag and draw squiggles over fondant, can look quite effective with silver balls and or edible glitter...

royal icing in peaks is difficult to get wrong.

Another vote for royal icing snow scene as the easiest thing to do. Add some glitter powder if you must. Xmas Grin

See, I did royal icing with snow peaks 'a la Delia' one year and it set so rock hard it was actually inedible. Just saying - you can get it wrong so make sure you read the recipe correctly Xmas Grin

Thanks all.
A snow scene looks doable, will definitely add glycerine to avoid tooth breakagesXmas Grin

Warning though, if you have meringue haters in family don't bother with royal icing as it will only get picked off
