For eldest DS so full size (20"). Budget about £180 max (though funds running low so less would be great).

I know you can get ones about £80 but independent reviews (I. E. Any not on the site they are selling them on) are pretty pants. Any recommendations?

Would you go for 2nd hand and a 'better' name or new? Getting close to the big day now and this is my last thing for DC to buy-help!

Definitely second hand. DS had a Halfords bmx (although only 16' so really just a bike in the style of a bmx!) but last year he got a second hand Monty trials push bike for £100 (they're over £500 new) and the difference in quality is insane! I know you wouldn't be looking at a Monty but it just illustrates the differences between a new Halfords bike and a second hand specialist bike.

Second hand definitely. Allow budget to get checked at a bike shop though and it will be a billion times better than the Halfords one...
