Any ideas for DS (16) who isn't "into" anything?

doistayordoigo · 01/12/2016 18:03

DS1 is 16 but isn't really into anything...I've but him a few things I think he might like, but need a few more ideas for fairly cheap items that still look a reasonable size. He doesn't like clothes, toiletries, music, sports, or anything particularly, and has no idea what he wants himself. No hobbies or particular interests. I'm stuck...does anybody have any ideas at all before I go completely mad!

What about some type of activity or adventure voucher? Like a young drivers or off road thing? It might lead to a hobby or interest..

doistayordoigo · 01/12/2016 18:55

Thanks Ruby we've already got him a couple of young driver lessons and the highway code/CD thing for the theory test, as he turns 17 in the summer, so it would have been a great idea if I hadn't already got it Grin

What does he spend his time doing? He must do something in his spare time.

AgeingArtemis · 01/12/2016 19:18

Rucksack?
Headphones/mouse? (every 16 year old I know spends lots of time on the computer Grin)

doistayordoigo · 01/12/2016 19:28

He's either doing homework (A-levels), on his phone, the laptop or the games console. He says there aren't any new games he wants, just been diagnosed ASD, so not generally very social. Had headphones for his birthday in the summer.

Mine is exactly the same in age/interests (or lack of!) -he's asked for Xbox vouchers so he can buy add ons to the games he already has...also thinking maybe of a raspberry pi?

doistayordoigo · 01/12/2016 19:42

Will look at Raspberry Pi but not sure if it's a bit niche if he hasn't asked for it? Don't think he's as into the Xbox as his brother, but I'll try to find out...

Gaming beanbag? Swanky deskchair? VR headset? Mobile phone projector?

doistayordoigo · 01/12/2016 19:49

Some good ideas...already got VR headset, and have looked at the projectors, but they don't seem to get very good reviews. No room for a deskchair unfortunately, maybe a beanbag....although then I'd have to get his brother one too! They're so difficult at this age!

What about guides for his favourite games? Ds has autism and loves them, so much so he's scuppered one of his Christmas presents by ordering himself a copy of one I'd ordered.
Other stuff he likes are notebooks and sketch pads and nice pens and pencils as he writes and draws. I've bought him a remote control flying dragon as a fun gift as i tend to buy something silly. Books, he likes fact books about pretty much anything tbh. Dressing gown and lounge pants are also popular.

doistayordoigo · 01/12/2016 19:59

Ashamed to admit I don't actually know what his favourite games are Blush

He goes through reams of paper making lists and diagrams, but has moved onto excel spreadsheets too, so nothing I can gift there! I've got a few books already, but mostly fiction actually, so I could look for some facty ones. Would love to get him a dressing gown and lounge pants but he's recently taken to only wearing shorts around the house so would probably be wasted Hmm

Big chalk board / dry wipe marker white board for his room? The white boards are good as you can also attach paper notes to them with magnets.

insan1tyscartching · 01/12/2016 20:15

You could ask his brother about the games, I bet he knows Wink I ask ds's brothers as he tends to talk more to them as he considers me too old to know about such stuff tbh. Ds is into Final Fantasy games so I've got him a poster and a t shirt. A box set of a series he likes or a netflix or Amazon subscription would be well received here.

bigredfireengine · 01/12/2016 20:15

I got mine a raspberry pi as a surprise when 16- hasn't even been taken out o the drawer it was put in on boxing day as he wasn't interested.

Sound similar to mine. he is getting japanese anime figures, a couple of games, some pop figures, some sweets and chocolate. No clothes or toiletries as he doesn't see this was gifts. Exploding kittens with adult expansion pack (he has cards against humanity but you need adults to play it with as it is very rude) some pokemon figures and cards , apple headphones as he destroys them, a mobile phone battery power pack

Does he have an amazon wish list- if not ask him to set one up

doistayordoigo · 02/12/2016 18:22

Sorry, tried to post last night to say thanks for all the ideas, but my internet kept crashing...really grateful to everyone who's suggested something.

My 16 yo is a struggle too. I got him a gaming beanbag last year which he loves.

This year I have -
a range of hot sauces front Psychojuice. He loves the really hot stuff.also Psychojuice mug and t shirt.
A segway voucher for him and dh from Groupon.
A onesie
Power pack for phone
Ex long USB lead
Chilli chocolate roulette
I'm looking at a cheap drone from Maplin - just a simple one not a huge £££ one.
Toiletries - he doesn't consider these gifts but he's getting them anyway as he uses them at a frightful rate.
Greggs gift card.
He will also get money which I'm hoping he saves to put towards driving lessons but he will probably spend on crap

AnnaForbes · 03/12/2016 06:00

And Montezuma hot chocolate buttons in a jar - really good for hot choc.

Serin · 03/12/2016 10:08

Cards against humanity Grin

StreetKid · 03/12/2016 10:20

This is great. Thanks for all the brilliant ideas.

LadyBaelish · 03/12/2016 10:56

Anna can I ask where you got the chilli chocolate roulette from? Sounds like something my DS1 would like!

doistayordoigo · 03/12/2016 11:59

Some really great ideas guys, some of which I've already got, so at least I know I'm probably on the right track so far!

Wankers thanks so much for taking the time to add that list, I think I might be coming back to it several times.

AnnaForbes · 03/12/2016 13:25

Lady baelish, I bought it online. Loads of sellers if you Google - all selling the same product for around £6 iirc.

doistayordoigo · 03/12/2016 14:55

B&M do a chilli chocolate challenge (not roulette) for £2.99.
