We're getting one each for our 4yo and 6yo this Christmas.

Do you mean the tablet or the ereader as they are totally different products?

Kindle tablet - like any tablet, pretty young these days, well before school.

Kindle e-reader - from when they are reading 'properly' though there are a range of different types of books on there nowadays. DD has read with one since being about 9 or 10. These days Id have got one earlier - they just weren't quite as accessible back then, especially for children.

Any device that you can use to read electronically, the kindle looks favourite but I am open to other ideas

If it's mainly for reading then a kindle ereader is easier on the eyes than reading on a tablet

Ds has been reading on my old kindle paperwhite since age 9
